Do you spend much of your time on the road but less time for sightseeing?

Travel to Malaysia for a smooth vacation. Here are the three key factors to make your next memorable trip

Transportation:

Travel by Land: To facilitate the ease of traveling around in Malaysia, the government has spent millions of Ringgit in the construction of Road system include Highways and causeways.

Since 1960-1970 period, construction of highways ( freeway) has began in to connect major cities and towns such as the North-South Highway stretch over 772 KM from the northern town of Bukit Kayu Hitam in the state of Kedah at the Thailand border to the southern city of Johore Baru in the state of Johore, at the border of Singapore. The construction of this highway stated in 1977 and fully completed in 1994. This North-South Highway cut through 7 states from the most northern town of Kedah, Penang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, and Johor. This "shortcut" has shortened traveling time for tourist of locals as well as overseas visitors.

To further enhance the road transportation, there is an East-West highway build in 1970 and completed in 1982 connecting the Gerik town in Perak ( West coast ) to Jeli town in the state of Kelantan in the east coast. At a later year in 1993, the building of Kulim to Gerik Highway has begun and completed in the year 2005 subsequently more highways were build to complete the interconnectivity of highway system.

Due to this road system development, many property developments along these highways have mushroomed. Tourist spots and place of interest in various town along the highways are now more accessible which also brought about an opportunity for the locals to travel around Malaysia domestically to get to know own country better.

Before the construction of the North-South Highway, it depends heavily on the trunk roads which are narrow and winding in certain stretches. The travel time take 2-3 times longer and accident rate was higher. I still remember it took me about 5-6 hours to travel from Penang Island to Kuala Lumpur as compared to 3.5 hours now on the North-South Highway. To regain driver's energy for long distance driving, Rest and Recreation area are build at strategic milestone along the highway and they are equipped with food & refreshment and Petrol Refill Stations.

Besides the road system, Malaysian towns were connected with railways as main transportation for cargo and passengers connecting between the northern town, Padang Besar in the state of Perlis and Singapore in the South. And the East coast railway starts from Gemas town in Negeri Sembilan to the northern town, Kota Baru in the state of Kelantan, East Coast.

Due to the rapid development of traffic flow, more railways are regularly upgraded and the double track railway has been upgraded in stages. A certain stretch of double track railway has completed cut short the travel time by almost half. For those who like to travel by train, there is more choice of a train with comfortable coaches plying big cities with lesser stopped over a small town. Hence further cut short the travel time. I like to use the train as my distance travel once a while as there are many sceneries to be viewed which is not available if you use another form of transportation.

Moving around from railway station to your destination has been served by taxi. And it has added a new fleet of taxis such as the GRAB and Uber in the cities and major towns. This complete the transportation cycle.

As the Kuala Lumpur is the main focus for development both for business and leisure, traffic flow has become a challenge to the town planner. A major master plan for an integrated Intercity Rail System was planned and construction has begun as early as in 1970's

Then there is this Intercity Rail System which offers different rail transport at a different part of the city. Example are:-

  • Express Rail Link ( ERL ) Connecting KL Sentral in the Kualumpur Lumpur City center to Kuala Lumpur International Airport ( KLIA )

  • Light Rapid Transit ( LRT ) with two mainline i.e, Kelana Jaya Line connecting Putra Height to Setapak and the Ampang Line connecting Putra Height to Ampang and Mid of Kuala Lumpur.

  • MonoRail is a short rail transport system that connects several shopping malls within Kuala Lumpur city center

  • Mass Rapid Transit ( MRT ) is the latest rail system which connects Sungei Pulih to Kajang.

For connectivity of all the three railway system, there is strategy interchange station where you can exchange transportation. Examples are:-

  • KL Sentral for all the rail system ( Train, LRT, ERL, MRT, and Monorail )
  • Masjid Jamid
  • Pasar Sini
  • Chan Sau Lin

As a major benefit to people who like to travel for business, leisure or sightseeing, this road, and rail system can be easily accessible to place of interest such as those listed below:-

  • Langkawi Island is a duty-free island best for those who like the sea and the beaches
  • Penang Island also known as Pearl of Orient for its historical place as well as beaches and local food. Penang Island was once duty-free island where you can shop with low price
  • Ipoh is a place of mountain and caves and a local food heaven. Once also known as a tin mining town, Ipoh has built a theme park in Tambun.
  • Kuala Lumpur which is the capital of Malaysia has almost anything the modern city has. There are much worth to visit places like KLCC Twin Tower, KL Tower which you can view the entire KL city, Museum, historical Train Station, Batu Caves and many places of interest. Kuala Lumpur is also famous as a food heaven. Especially the local cuisine such as Nasi Lemak, Laksa, Banana Leaf Rice and so many more. It is a shopping heaven too for local items and souvenirs.
  • Down south is the Port Dickson town which has miles of beautiful beaches as well as 5-star hotels along the beach.
  • Then further south is the historical town of Melaka where you can feel a very different culture. It was once occupied by the Portuguese and its influence is still there until today.
  • Then to the furthest down south is Johor Baru which has an Eco Land and Theme Park famous for the locals as well as overseas tourist.
  • If you like clean beaches, you should move over to Pulau Tioman in the state of Johor where a 5-star holiday resort is situated. It is a quiet and peaceful layback resort.
  • Move towards the East Coast is the Royal Town called Kuantan where the Club Med is located. As you may be aware, Club Med is an international tourist set up and it has its own infrastructure and program for their visitors in their 5-star resorts around the world.
  • Moving further north along the east coast is the Pulau Redang and Pulau Perhentian where crystal clear water sea is most suitable for snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming
