Hiking Overload in the Abel Tasman Wilderness, Tauranga Bay & Punakaiki

July 2020 · 2 min read · Tasman

A Hike in the Abel Tasman National Park , New Zealand's smallest national park located in the north end of the south island was our family's idea of spending the last day of the year. With the exciting events of the New Year's Eve brewing ahead, we walked along the shaded coastal track for about 8.6 kilometers from Marahau to Apple Tree Bay and return. Read more about the mentioned hike here.

The following day (Day 13), on the way to Punakaiki, we took a detour to Cape Foulwind Seal Colony, a lovely self guided walking track that is known for fur seal colony, panoramic views of the coastline, mountain and the sea. We walked for an hour and a half along the coast from the lighthouse to Tauranga Bay and perched on one of the bench for a quick lunch break and partly chased by seagulls.

We were on the road again to Punakaiki. From our mountain cottage, we walked towards the bay and spent the rest of the afternoon hiking again for 7 kilometer walk. This time, along the impressive limestone gorge of Porari River Track.

Day 14, after a restful night in our mountain cottage room, we packed our bags, loaded them in the car to drive down south. On the way, just before it rained, we visited Pancake Rocks and Blowholes at Dolomite Point in Punakaiki.

Punakaiki was our family's top and most favorite site we visited in New Zealand. Our major regret was not spending more time here.
