Wednesday Walk Takes us Back to Boston

Wednesday Walk Takes us Back to Boston

July 2019 · 5 min read

Welcome back to Boston! If you have been following the Boston posts, I believe we left off in the Granary Burying Ground, a very unassuming looking piece of cemetery. There is no denying that it is rich in its own history, where it is the burial ground for famous American patriots like Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams. Would you believe it is also the final resting place for Mother Goose? I am hoping we have time for a little Tea Party that we never got around to last week. Why don't we just go for another #WednesdayWalk instead? Get acquainted with the neighborhood and see if we can find anything of interest on our way.

Today is #WednesdayWalk with @Tattoodjay. It was a challenge started by him to get people up and moving, all the while, looking for something to photograph. You can find his current post here! along with the rules guidelines to the challenge. It's all the rage! Everyone is doing it!

This is the Old State House in Boston. We will begin our walk here today! It is at the cross section of Washington and State Streets. How appropriately named or probably renamed. It was built in 1713 which I have a hard time wrapping my head around. In terms of buildings in American history, it is one of the oldest surviving public buildings in the United States. It was the seat of the Massachusetts General Court for 85 years, until 1798. It is now a history museum.

This is the front of the building. The balcony shown is where the Declaration of Independence was read for the first time. This caused a riot and the Lion and the Unicorn at the top of the building was ripped down and burnt. When it was refurbished in 1883, it was put back and to this day, every July 4th at 10 am, the Declaration of Independence is read from that very balcony.

On March 5, 1770, The Boston Massacre took place right here, in the front part of the Old State House. Lieutenant Governor Thomas Hutchinson went out to the balcony and ordered the crowd to disperse and return to their homes.

In the center of the monument to the Boston Massacre is a five-pointed star signifying the 5 deaths which are surrounded by six cobblestones, for the six wounded. There are 13 cobblestone spokes representing the original 13 colonies. Three of the five people killed were buried in the Granary Burial Ground, along with Paul Revere.

Keep going down the Freedom Trail and you will see a hopscotch-like monument to the oldest school in America, Boston Latin School, established in 1635 and still in operation to this day. The monument is on the sidewalk of the original site, it is now located near Fenway Park. Some of its famous students include Benjamin Franklin, who also has a statue dedicated to him on the original site), John Adams, Samuel Adams and John Hancock

If you keep following the Freedom Trail, it will bring you to the “the Cradle of Liberty” Faneuil Hall (1742). This building was given to the city of Boston by Peter Faneuil. There were many meetings and protests, all which led to the American Revolution. You might remember it from last weeks #WednesdayWalk as it has the grasshopper, whose name was Gus, on the top of the building.

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"
