The Last Day (Iceland Day 9)

The Last Day (Iceland Day 9)

June 2018 · 3 min read

I sure had enough of the cold, and the vast barren icy landscapes, and was anticipating getting through the last day as fast as humanly possible. Which is to say, exactly the same speed at which we were already going. Unless I had some "brain enhancers". Anyway, in the same vein I think I'm ready to stop writing about it, so this is it!

The first stop? The last waterfall.

A lot of people today, and a very nice day. The snow path to the falls was quite slushy this time around. On the left lie patches of ice over a stream, and the falls on the distance, looking tiny compared to the towering mountain overhead.

I think the water in this moving picture is going faster than real time.

Here's a clearer shot. Those rocks look like they could be guardians of some deep secret.

Nearby there was this landmark, accompanied by an eerie sign indicating that we are in prison space. I wonder if that Icelandic Bitcoin thief was housed here. And did he break out? I forget. Hmm no, the prison isn't on top of that mountain, but the mountain itself is rather interestingly shaped.

After a short drive we were back in the beloved big city, with the iconic church. We were here for our last meal together before we would go our separate ways.

Nice warm bread. Special here because they have some of their smoked salts and fresh butter.

Grilled fish again and fish soup. Again. For the last time. Tasty and pricey. But hey, it's the last day.

We talked about what our favorite parts of the trip were. I think we pretty much narrowed it down to the hot spring and the glacier hike. But the general experience was nice and scenic. Therapeutic.

One of the nice things is that over these days we definitely grew closer. I suppose it's inevitable when squeezed into a tiny box for days on end. We'll see some of them again in Taiwan, and perhaps we'll visit the UK as well for the other two in the near future. I wonder how they are all doing now...

Everything on the way out was fairly smooth. But in classic @eonwarped style, I almost took the keys of the last host whose place we stayed at with me to New York. I was lucky to have received a phone call from the host, and it was after I went through security. Turns out it was okay to exit, deliver the keys, and go back in. But that was just an unnecessary scare.

I wonder if I will ever choose to go back to Iceland or not. If you ask me right now, I don't think so. I would like to see the Aurora when it's very bright though. But that doesn't have to be in Iceland. Anyway, hope you enjoyed following along the Iceland series! Bye for now.
