The Chestnut Tree of 100 Horses

.. that's the name of this old Chestnut Tree, located on the Volcano Mount Etna in Sicily.
It might look like several trees, but these are all part of the somewhere between 2000 - 4000 year old Chestnut Tree! The largest and oldest known chestnut tree in the world. It is located only 5 miles from the central crater of Etna, and has survived several eruptions in it's long long life!

The tree's name originated from a legend in which a company of 100 knights were caught in a severe thunderstorm. According to the legend, all of them were able to take shelter under the massive tree.

I visited this tree on an excursion with a group of homeschoolers at a homeschool gathering in 2017, where we went to see the 3 big trees of Mount Etna.

This tree is so old that it needs a cane..!

It was very impressive to be in the presence of this incredibly old being, though I must admit that we and the children enjoyed the visits to the two other trees more..! This tree was fenced and it had a bit sad air around it. Like an old lady who just wants peace..
The other two trees were open and the kids could crawl in them. The third (a type of oak) was even more free as it was located far into the forest, and Willow, my son, told me in a very casual tone that he saw a "little green man" close to the last tree!

The second largest and oldest chestnut tree, which I currently forgot the name of, sorry..!

The third biggest, but most magic and free tree with forest spirits living around!:

This is my entry to @manoldonchev's photography @treeplanter contest #photoanthill Let's Plant Some Trees which I just had to enter after what happened here lately!
I have witnessed so many trees falling first hand after the big storm in Italy and the world in whole has lost even more trees from all the forest fires all over the world this year!
As if that wasn't enough, this morning the neighbour cut down a beautiful big Twisted Willow Tree in the garden, after their Weeping Willow tree fell in the storm, so where there were previously two beautiful Willows, now there are none..! Why do people do this!? It is high time to plant some trees and lots of them!!

Thank you @treeplanter and @manoldonchev for this great initiative! I will plant some trees too!!
