Let's travel together #100 - Cascada Termală Toplița (The Mesothermal Waterfall "Toplița")

April 2019 · 4 min read · Toplița

I've always been fascinated by waterfalls. And not only because of their flow, altitude or their location, but because each one of them has a unique story to be told.
And more than a story, the waterfall teaches you how to go with the flow and to never let the problems settle as the stones do.
Plus, as a bonus that this is my #100 travel post over here, the waterfall is unique as well, as it is a (meso)thermal one and it hides a lot of interesting things which I had no idea that they even exist.

Cascada Termală Toplița is located in south-west of the city with the same name, Harghita County, and it represents a protected area with high national interest, being a natural monument.
The natural reservation has been officially declared a protected area in March 2000, when it was discovered that despite where it is located, it's not a common waterfall.
Cascada Termală Toplița covers a surface of 0,50 ha and the water which is flowing has a temperature of 27°C even during the winter.
Another interesting fact is that the water contains a high content of calcium carbonate which is constantly changing its colour and structure due to the travertine deposits which are coming from the carbonated and mineral water, filed on vegetation.

Although, it usually takes a few hours to climb the mountains and reach a beautiful waterfall which is going to caress your soul while it's clearing your mind and filling your soul with lots of amazing memories, Cascada Termală Toplița is not even close to the mountains, but actually right next to the street and on just 7m away from the railways, offering some incredible landscapes to the travelers.

Cascada Termală Toplița is considered the most interesting waterfall from Romania and the 2nd one in Europe, right after Cascate del Mulino from Italy, but which is way too little promoted for its beauty and uniqueness.
Both of the waterfalls has a lot of things in common, one of them being that none of these two is too much known, not even into the country of residence although they are so different than any other water gathering. Their only chance to get more visibility is when tourists come by and write down some impressions about the places visited, on their blogs. The two waterfalls are located in some very small villages where the tourism is not promoted as it should, being exclusively created by nature without any help or care provided by locators or any human being.

The water which keeps flowing no matter what the season is, comes from the springs found into Bradul Station which are very rich in calcium. The colour of the water is somewhere between clean-white water and dark brown depending on the amount of travertine deposited.
Cascada Termală Toplița worth being visited in all 4 seasons because each time you will discover a different looking waterfall. If you are lucky enough, you might even see it being frozen because there are very rare moments when if the temperature drops below -25°C, the water starts freezing creating some wonderful ice stalactites.

Cascada Termală Toplița is located at the edge of Toplița city, at the intersection of two national roads - DN12 and DN15.
Once you enter the city, you have to keep walking/driving on Nicolae Bălcescu Boulevard until you cross a bridge and then go to the left on Strada Cascadei (The Waterfall Street) where you will discover the unique and beautiful waterfall.
