Let's travel together #117 - Arc de Triomf (Barcelona Tour)

August 2019 · 4 min read · Barcelona

It's impossible not to feel a thrill when you visit a monument dedicated to the heroes died in different wars or to the army, but when you get to see an arch which is focusing on the people from all over the world that are passing under it and just welcome them, is really beautiful and emotional. That's what I call standing out from all the others Arc de Triomfs from all over the world.

There are plenty of famous arches in the world, remembering the one from Paris (France), Bucharest (Romania), Rome (Italy), and so on, but the Arc de Triomf from Barcelona (Spain) is quite different than those mentioned before.
Arc de Triomf was built in 1888, with over 80years after the one from Paris, and it's way smaller than a usual arch even though it might not seem so.
The Arc de Triomf from Barcelona measures a height of 30m and that's just half of the Parisian monument, but what makes it so different than the others is that it's more like a civil monument than the usual ones which are dedicated to soldiers and military domain.

The Arc de Triomf from Barcelona was Built by the architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas using the orientalist architecture which is also known as Moorish Revival architecture including the red bricks which are creating a unique contrast between the arch and the blue sky.

The monument was firstly built with the main purpose of an entrance to the Barcelona Universal Exhibition which was located in the Ciutadella Park but which had to be renovated in 1889 giving it a completely new intention.

Some of the unique elements and details that can be found on the arch are the Spanish monarchy's arms located right at the top above the arch, being completed by the lions situated on either sides, but also 4 angels and 12 female sculptures which are symbolizing celebrity.
From the many domains you will find specific symbols graved on the Arc de Triomf from Barcelona, we remember agriculture, art, science, commerce and even industry.
To make all these different styles being mixed properly, the architect collaborated with some other talented people like J. Reynés, A. Vilanova, P. Carbonell, J. Llimona, M. Fuxà and T. Tasso.
The reason for having so many different elements on a simple arch was pretty simple - to welcome all the nations that are passing under the Arc de Triomf.

What makes the walking even more entertaining is everything you will get to admire until you reach Arc de Triomf which is located on Passeig Lluis Companys Boulevard, a street filled with lots of interesting buildings that are going to bring a smile on your face in just a few seconds.

And if you thought that's all about Arc de Triomf from Barcelona, find out that it's located on just a few mins away from the Ciutadella Park where you will get to see lots of interesting places and even green parrots flying from a palm tree to another, making your journey more enjoyable.

The whole arch's magnificence is being completed by the many cyclists, skaters, singers, DJ's, giant bubble-makers and street artists that are spending their time in this part of the city.

To reach Arc de Triomf from Barcelona, you can use public transport - Metro: L1 until you reach Arc de Triomf stop, Bus: 19, 39, 40, 41, 42, 51, 55, or Train Renfe: Arc de Triomf stop.
We opted for the walking alternative to get to explore better the surroundings and city, continuing our journey from visiting Casa Milà and Casa Batlló, the arch being located on 1,6km away, which is around 20mins of walking.
