Let's travel together #57 - Zărnești Gorge (Cheile Zărnești)

April 2018 · 4 min read · Brașov

It's not a surprise anymore that Brasov it's one of the most beautiful cities from Romania, but it also have a lot of interesting things that you can visit around.
For example The Zărnești Gorge which caught my attention and made me want to write about it.

Zărnești Gorge is a narrow path with beautiful natural walls which measures around 200 meters height being located on the marge of Brasov city.
The gorges are about 5KM long and are looking forward for their tourists in any time of the year, no matter whether is winter, summer, or any other season - a little trip to this place will always be safe and refreshing for your soul.

If you are a beginner in the world of mountain lovers, the Zărnești Gorge may be the perfect place to start your adventure.

Why am I saying that?

Because a trip to this place won't require for too much effort from you or your body, as the delicate path that is described among the high cliffs is very welcoming for any kind of visitors, even for the kids. We are talking about one hour of walking through the mountains, admiring the landscapes which are reviving our soul and mind with the fresh and clean air that is surrounding us.

The wonderful and wild lanscapes that takes your breath away has also convinced and inspired a few stage directors to take advantage of the beauty offered by the nature and record some movies in this place - that's pretty cool, isn't it?

Zărnești Gorge is also the first place where I saw real climbers as there are plenty of stones specially arranged for this kind of activities, the biggest one having about 115 metters height.

I've always prefered camping rather than renting a room somewhere but if you are thinking where you could sleep in all this time, there are many guest houses located right on the edge of the wild landscapes, some of them calling for your adventurous kind - having lots of mountainbike trails ready for your and your friends but also activities like bungee jumping and ziplining!

Wohoo..

Even if you are traveling by your own, in the wonderland of Zărnești you will never be alone as the water which slowly flows through the rocks will break the silence and accompany you during your trip.

But as every good thing has also a bad part, there are rumours saying that the water used to appear only in the rainy times or after the winter, but lately became a part of this area constantly flowing through the rocks and by time this action will have a really negative impact making the stones break and fall down - the gorges taking the embodiment of a wild place where the nature takes the decisions.

...and this is how in the past years the water created 21 CAVES!! This is really crazy!

Zărnești Gorges are also very important because they make the connection to other hiking routes where tourists can visit two chalets called Cabana Curmatura and Cabana Brusturet.

The gorges are part of the Piatra Craiului National Park together with Dambovicioara Gorges, Brusturelui Gorges and Dambovita Gorges - each one of them definitely worthing a trip whenever you get the chance to.

Because of the sharpened appearence of the natural walls that are surrounding our little trip, this place is also known as The chasms of Zărnești (RO: Prapastiile Zarnestiului) which are hiding a cave called The Bats Cave which represents a protected area.

I remember that I visited this place when I was pretty young (like 5 or 6 years ago) but I'm quite curious how this place evolved during this period when a lot of changes came out - from crazy hot weather to winter in March and so on..
So if you visit this place before I get the chance to see it again, make sure to take some pictures and compare them with those 6 years old images attached in my travel post.
Let's discover together how nature leveled up!
