Sometimes we are sad.
Sometimes we need a break.
Sometimes all we want is to take the train and run away.
Run to a new place, a new adventure and a new journey,
to discover
a new
YOU..
On the land of the wonderful Maramureș we are far away from discovering all its beauties, but we are still trying to.
And one of them is this little town called Vişeu de Sus which doesn't say too many things if we think about its name - but what we are yet to discover, will make the words become worthless.
We are talking about a different kind of train station, which is dedicated to the tourists who wish to take a ride deep into the heart of the mountains for 6.5 hours of stress-free.
The train station was created in 1932 and it represents one of the most valuable treasures of the country, being the last steamed forestry railway from the world.
The railway works even today, for both promoting the tourism of Maramureș but also for transporting the wood.
Seeing a real steam locomotive that takes you to the mountains, it's more than what people could ask for. And what makes the 21,5km long ride so beautiful is that along with your journey there are going to be numerous stops for taking pictures, enjoying the nature, eating, connecting with the mountains and exploring the surroundings.
The access for tourists started in 2000 when the trains with steam (Mocăniţa) became a point of interest for people who wished to discover to mountains of Maramureș in a unique way.
The season starts in spring and it ends in autumn, the trains running daily, and during the winter there are only rides starting with Thursday until Sunday depending on the weather condition.
The tickets can be purchased online or at the train station, and the prices are different for adults/students/children/old people and people with disabilities.
Currently, the prices for the standard package is 92RON (19EUR) for adults, 82RON (17EUR) for students and 69RON (14EUR) for children.
One important fact is that the prices are not stable and they are different from a month to another depending on the season and holidays, prices going down to 30% in March-June and October-November.
The price for the packages that include food is a little bit higher and the food is going to be served during the stops of the train being specially arranged places for this kind of activities.
Updated prices together with what includes every package can be found on the official website of the train station, and it's recommended to make a booking before buying the tickets in order to be sure that you are going to have a seat. You are also allowed to choose what kind of locomotive and train you wish to take the ride with.
