Homeward bound: Two Aussie's travel the world

July 2018 · 3 min read

Today is Friday, the day my wife and I leave Finland and head home to Australia after six weeks of vacation. It's an odd feeling really and I find going home after an extended trip always feels this way. We have long flights and layover's to look forward to and after leaving on Friday will arrive back home in Australia on Sunday after three flights of three, thirteen and seven hours respectively and layovers of four hours in Heathrow airport and six hours in Singapore airport. Of course these places are set up for travellers and so it won't be too bad. What is bad is the prospect of all that travelling and lack of sleep all just to take us back home and back to work. Depressing.

This image is me, no not the one with the green top on, the other one one! The little cutie holding on to me is my niece who is the cutest little thing ever! I met her (in person) a week ago and have fallen in love with her although to be honest I already was just through video chats and photos! She is so intelligent, funny and fun to be around although again, I'm completely biased! My wife and I will miss her a lot, even just writing this I'm tearing up a little. Having said that, we have started to plan our next trip here which is going to take place in 2020!

On this trip we have seen amazing places, learned new things, and met some great people including random travellers and tourists to my sister-in-law's family who are really lovely people. It's been a great trip and we are looking forward to going through our photos, all 12,500 of them. Yes, that many. But the best part has been seeing my family.

Today is all about saying good by to my brother @tarazkp, his lovely wife @momone and their super-cute daughter @smallsteps, my niece. It's a sad day and yet we need to look forward to the future and know that we will be reunited again in the not too distant future. One positive from today is that we will soon be reunited with our own little babies, our cats Merlin and Cleo who we have missed very much.

It's going to be difficult for my brother and sister-in-law to explain to their daughter why we are not there, that we're not in the next room or somewhere close and whilst I am sure she'll be ok am also sure she will be sad and will miss us very much. She's two years old and whilst she's very intelligent she is also just a two year old and won't understand. We'll send some video's when we're home so she can see us but that won't be the same and again will not understand the distance. We'll be back though and I'll get to cuddle here again. She'll be a little older then and will probably steal my heart in new and amazing ways. I've been teaching her to talk like an Australian so I reckon the next time I see her not only will I get a big hug and kiss, I'll also get a "g'day mate!" (She is so cute when she says it...)

Saying good bye can be hard when it's between adults but today it'll be so much harder to do when the time comes to say good bye to my niece. I miss her already.
