Chronicles of a Luxury Vagabond - Just Cruising... [part 2]

Just Cruising...
Just Cruising...

After experiencing what could possibly be the most intense storm in my life, I woke up in my rented Volkswagen Polo for another day in the Greek paradise.

Today I want to get more into what I actually mean by luxury vagabonding and the reasoning that let me to create this form of budgeteering...

Because my budget was always somewhat limited, over the years I have developed tactics and manners that helps me on my prolonged vacations slash journeys. As I am not Christopher Columbus or any like minded big time explorers, my journeys are somewhat smaller scale. Economical situation is different these days and most of the known world was discovered already anyway, so one can argue what journeys, it's all one big holiday...

Before any trip whatsoever I am diving into online research on local prices, services, climate and geography. This helps with planning a lot. Depending on what financial situation allows I am creating the whole strategy. Be it staying in hostel, camp or enjoying privacy in some airbnb. The length of my trip also dictates my conditions. In case of Corfu, we are talking about very complicated situation both on financial and geographical fronts. The weather played a role too as it was beginning of September and local rainy season kicked in.

For me Corfu was only a four day layover from which I would than continue to Athens to meet up with a friend of mine. So, what were my options? Getting into hostel or apartment on average for 15 euros a night only to limit myself to a specific area or change a place every night? None of that seemed interesting to me and I have chosen a very elegant yet unusual solution.

A rented car had to become my apartment on wheels. And like a snail I have kept all of my belongings with me for whole duration of my stay. Not only I had bought into potential shelter when it comes to worst, but I could comfortably lock all my things in and go anywhere just with small backpack with absolute necessities. Already after my arrival came something to be called a storm of the summer and I had to put my theory into practice.

After some shopping for basic food items I have headed to lesser inhabited places of the Island and experienced total beauty. Little mountain roads become source of fun while driving and food for my eyes. Corfu is really special and coming there after good chunk of summer spent on Ibiza, I was surprised how amazed I was by its beauty. More humid climate made it livable even in the small car I have rented and had to spent my first night in because of the storm. Next days were luckily without any rain and I was able to get by with my hammock. But more on that in the next episode...
