Echoes from the past and fishermen in harbor. [Honest review Batumi]

July 2020 · 2 min read · Batumi

The harbor. Place of great significance of any city or country. Place where local meets global. For thousands of years sailors were providing with fish and exotic products to improve the life on land. Batumi is no exception.

The harbor is rather small, yet very beautiful. On one side industrial and a smaller one for private boats on the other. Typically harbor is the center of the city. Restaurants and bars are lined up from there and go deeper into the city.

I was just on my relaxed walk around and to my luck in the good sunlight so the photos turned out to be quite vivid and sharp.

As I walk around, the history talks to me... I can almost see the good old days of pirates, smugglers and privateers roaming around the black sea, in between countries, jurisdictions and climates in search of profits and personal freedoms no country on land could provide.

Fishing is more like a social activity here. Who cares how many fish to pull out if you can have a good laugh with your mates, right?

Time well spent.

At this point, the harbor meets the city beach and becomes more touristic. One can go on a party boat or just cruise around in a small speadboat for about 100 Lari an hour. I haven't done that but there is always somebody trying to offer their service to you.

Having seen quite few harbors already I am giving 8 out of 10 to this one. Only to have some space for improvement, but with comparison to Ibiza for example where obviously harbor is massive and full of expensive yachts, Batumi still has it's charm and somewhat "oldtimer" vibe...
