I didn't had balls to swim there. [Honest Review Batumi]

June 2020 · 3 min read · Batumi

Hey ya all,

starting a new blog series with rather disappointing news. I'll be honest here. What is often presented like a paradise might be far from true in reality. Don't get me wrong, Batumi is cool place and I am happy to be here, but I thought with lot of stereotypes and almost mystical prejudices surrounding this place, I have to break that apart.

So, summer and the sea are two biggest selling points here. If you have never been to the black sea, you might be a little disappointed. They call it Black for a reason. it is not so clear like others due to lot of seaweed and during storms it can be quite deadly place.

The beach consist mostly of small rocks which are nice and rounded but that on itself can be a no go for sandy beach lovers. Not a problem for me too.

Today I will present you photos from one afternoon I have decided to skate as far as my legs allow me and find one beach which could be as well considered candy.

Batumi’s industrial harbor. An important regional base.
Batumi’s industrial harbor. An important regional base.

The city center is quite easy to skate through thanks to net of cycle paths and sidewalks, than you have to cross the industrial area to get to pass the local fish market and enter yet another decent path next to a highway.

That takes some time and without a skateboard or bicycle it would be good two hour walk from the center. Technically it is still Batumi as the city spread itself along the coast for quite some kilometres. The local fish market is well known source of sketchiness, it is not long ago that they experience some gas involved explosion and as I am not a big fan of the sea products I generally try to avoid that place. Next to it there is a highly suspicious car wash.

Okey, so this place was the first source of highly intensive smell and I thought I am getting into area I might be for last time. After another ten minutes pushing I arrive to what looks like another harbor and start thinking of dipping myself into water away from people as I forgot my swim wear.

It turned out to be a military controlled harbor and the entry was prohibited. To my luck I guess because when I have reached the beach the familiar smell from the car wash was still present. That did not stop locals from swimming there and if you're used to it, who knows, might do no harm to you.

I have enjoyed bottle of mineral water there and had to leave because of the sunset and a long way back to the center. No fun to skate in the dark risking hitting small rocks to flip over. But it gave me some extra time to make more pictures from the harbor, where almost any time of day lot of local fisherman both professional and amateur gather and practice fishing.
