Maskless trip to Göreme, Cappadocia - how to travel during and after pandemic...

January 2022 · 3 min read · Central Anatolia Region

Hit the road Jack... That tune was running around my head the whole day. After the decision to go for few days to "Cappa" there was no more excuses. It was a mission and the mission just started. Had to buy some kind of winter shoes and jacket in record time (one day to be precise), get the ticket online and hope it is gonna work out (no PCR, officially they could ask for one).

So, I've packed all my important belongings into one backpack and was headed to the bus station in Antalya. It takes a while from my base and so once I am ready to go I don't try to time it well and prefer to have some extra time to grab some food, cash and tea at the station. Specially the cash part turned out to be a good one as TRY was experiencing one of the biggest downswings in recent history.

Next thing you know, I am sitting on the bus, having no issues with proof of test or other nonsense, no mask, no problem off we go!!!

The journey from down south to the very geographical center of Turkey takes whole night, but I am well equipped and sleep half way through with my inflatable pillow and eyemask...

Arrived early the temperature shock is quite big. Too early to check in into one of many hostels all available for around 5 EUR I've decided to go up the hill and test my newly acquired drone (you can find some footage in the video attached). Payed a small fee to go with a short cut up on the cliff overseeing the town of Göreme, which is the starting point for many visitors.

Instantly warm welcomed by local street dogs, or shall I say wolfs? I am afraid of them trying to kill my drone, but it all went smooth and the dogs become friends of mine. After check in, I have warmed myself up in bed for an hour or so, killing my "buslag" and in early afternoon I am on my feet again exploring the town.

As cheap as Turkey is, it is not the case with food in Göreme. Maybe it is because it's off season now, but you'll struggle to find your average good old cheap kebab store. Only after few days I have discovered somewhat cheaper alternatives to this burger, which btw tasted awesome and was also well worth it, specially after a month or so of vegetarian diet...

Late afternoon I was getting kind of tired and cold, but it was still early to go back to fireplace and talk with other fellow travelers, so I gave it a try and go to something like a church in this tipical Cappa-chimney.

The highest hill on the last picture is supposed to be it, but it was closed and you need to be on an organised tour to get in. Which I hardly ever do. So I guess I will have to come back for that one some other time. Actually I wouldn't even mind visiting this magical place again, it is really so special that you feel almost like on another planet and it's history goes so deep and way back that it is surely a trip worth taking. Now, below the promised video containing some of my drone shots and a little report in spoken word for a change.
