Solo hiking in Niska Banja - forgotten spa resort in Serbia.

March 2022 · 3 min read · Serbia

If I should write a tourist guide of places totally off the radar, Niska Banja would surely be on the list. This place is actually reachable with the very public transport of the city Niš. Bus number 1 takes me to it's last stop, where it already looks like totally different location. It would be quite a walk from the city center. This forgotten spa resort is located right under the steep mountain slope, with thermal waters streaming right out of it.

The local quell was refreshing it's visitors since 1968 and it still tastes great to this day :)

During last cold days of February, one could see vapours coming out of this quell, as it has probably over 20°C. So, I've filled my little bottle and was ready to hit the path up the local hill.

Seeing some of the first flowers blooming gave me my daily dose of hopium. This long winter shall be soon over. The walk itself was pretty steep, but nothing to be worried for an average sporty individual. In fact a trained senior could go up as well without any big issues. The only problem was a rather muddy way from a midway up. Although to be expected at this part of the year.

The weather looked bleak from the bottom, as the sky looked closed with clouds. It was far from truth when I've finally reached a first point with some views.

"Sokolov put" a Falcon's path started up on the plato, following the ridge, further to where I was heading. It wouldn't be me if I wouldn't get lost for a bit, but it wasn't na biggy, just few minutes lost in the bush (next time I am going out with a machete)

After I finally found myself again, breathtaking views presented themselves to me and my drone. This still unexplored region has many things to offer to beginner and advanced hikers and potentially climbers as well.

I've met some of the local hikers on top, which were from a different decade to say the least, but it was nice to have a chat with like-minded people. As an old saying goes: "There are two kind of people, those who do go to the mountains and those who don't."

At the top of the hill I catch some necessary vitamin D, for a while and accumulated my batteries for the walk back, which was downhill but quite a distance yet again. If around and about in Niš, look for "Crni Vrh" - so called black peak, to find where to go. If using maps.me you'll easily find both the quell with thermal water and the walking path to the mountain.

All the best,
