Switzerland's own Grand canyon in canton Grisons. LAAX stories #5

July 2022 · 3 min read · Switzerland

One of the best days out on my bike went down last week, when accidentally cruised around the infamous Switzerland's Grand canyon.

As things usually are, former planning turns 180° and one is quickly following a new plan, only slightly resembling the old. As I was hoping to go on a bike trip to Safiental, I had absolutely no idea how far would it be, what is the best possible way, or what the terrain could look like. Taking a wrong turn just 20 minutes into my trip, was proving my thesis correct...

The views over river Rhein, with Cauma lake as a backdrop for the wooden fox.

Following my wrong turn was a technical descent, which turned to offroad walking path. So I had to push my bike for about fifteen minutes, calling myself an idiot. Even with online maps in your pocket, it is easy to make a wrong turn, if you're on a search for rather unknown trails.

After finally making my way back to rideable road, it was a downhill run for few kilometers to come. Refreshing for sure!

Down at the river banks appeared rather sketchy looking path, with a roadsighn pointing exactly my direction.

Swiss railroads are really as cool as being presented, here is one of them closely following the river Rhein.

Taking this left turn turned out to be the best part of the day trip. At least when it comes to the variety of its terrain and obstacles.

Sometimes it went so close to the water, I had to push the bike over the wooden structures, not to sank in quicksands. On other occasion it was ups and downs on the side of the mountain, being hold at the place by rocks and roots, which made it pretty bumpy ride for a while. Exactly what you would look for as a mountain biker...

Mountain biking at it's best in the Grand canyon of Switzerland.

Of course this amazing trail, didn't last forever and I was presented with a steep ascend, followed by another wrong turn and me ending up almost holding my bike on my shoulders, hiking up somewhat bushy "shortcut".

Nevertheless, the highest and furthest point of my roundtrip was a village called Versam. A tiny place dominated with church and unused football field.

From there a proper downhill started again as I had to make it back to the river to cross it back to my side.

Now, tell me if this doesn't look like a Grand canyon... Well, to my honest review, it looks more like some place in British Columbia in Canada. Maybe without the Catholic church. But still, it is really interesting part of Switzerland, both culturally and naturally. The views over here are just superb.

Untill next time,
