Visiting the youngest country in Europe - Culture trip to Kosovo.

November 2022 · 2 min read · Kosovo

There is no doubt Kosovo is the most controversial country in Europe. Some people and even governments don't call it a country to this very day. It was also the last place on Balkans I didn't visited yet. That changed last weekend when Japanese friend Nanako challenged me for the trip. Without her I would probably never go there.

After our arrival to Pristina International Bus Terminal it was time to grab a taxi. I honestly hate taxi drivers, but here there was no other option. Pristina is one of the worst places to visit as a pedestrian. The infrastructure is actually quite terrible. One could even argue there is no infrastructure. Car owners seem to park their cars everywhere they seem fit. It is thereby impossible to walk around like a human being. One jumps between traffic more like a donkey in Moroccan Medina rather than European city.

After we successfully arrived to our hotel, it was time to go and discover what this city has to offer.

The highlight of Pristina is probably the main boulevard full of cafés and some more cafés. Yes, there is not a big variety of choices for visitors to choose from. If you don't like café culture, better visit another country.

We will soon find out that this problem is wider than one could imagine. Kosovars seem to like certain things and only certain things. There is absolutely crazy amount of Burger stands and kiosks. We have counted about twenty Burger places to one restaurant offering some other cousine. To have a balanced diet is thereby very difficult...

But not to become some sort of Pristina hater I must admit I like the local prices. Kosovo's capital is very affordable place. One of those mentioned burgers is literally 1,5 euros. Actually even 50 cent goes a long way in Pristina. You can get a full load of white bread or decent cafe for half a euro.

Now, when examining our trip from comfort of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, I think the highlight of Kosovo was local beer called Peja. Maybe if we would be visiting this country in different season and search for some natural beauties instead of a busy and dirty capital, I would have better final thoughts. But for now I give Pristina weak five out of ten...

All the best,
