Singapore is a country full of many surprises.
On a trip to the Mongolian embassy here (while trying to sort a visit there in May), I found myself on the 24th floor of the Art Deco building Parkview Square.
A modern building completed in 2002, it has all the looks and charm of a classic Art Deco style building that INSTANTLY reminded me of Leo Di Caprio’s performance in the 2013 movie The Great Gatsby, surrounded by dark wood detailing and guilded in gold.
With a 15 metre high ceiling in the lobby that includes a cafe and restaurant, as well as a museum on the 3rd floor, it’s a fascinating building completely at odds with the otherwise ultra-modern Singapore sky-scrapers.
A quick search online into the building’s history suggested that “The bar in the lobby of the building has a unique 3-storey high wine chiller from which a female bartender dressed as a fairy used to retrieve bottles on request by means of a flying wire apparatus. In the bar's most recent reincarnation, this practice has been discontinued.”
A part of me is glad for this, and a part wishes that I could have seen it!
In any case, I have good news on the Mongolian visa front (my trip there will be happening!), and to celebrate the quick processing of this visa I treated myself to the most delicious cup of drinking chocolate I’ve ever tasted in a most extraordinary setting.
Now to continue exploring.
