Bere Ferrers & Cox Tor

Bere Ferrers & Cox Tor

March 2021 · 2 min read

Bere Ferrers, also know as Beerferris, is a village on the Bere peninsula in Devon, England. It's a remote and peaceful location on the west bank of the River Tavy, which feeds into the River Tamar and the Lynher River, which then feeds into the English Channel at Plymouth.

It's watery, and tidal, with vast expanses of mud at low tide, not a place to go for a swim, although the birds love it. You can sit on the river bank and relax in the serenity of it all.

I do have it on very good authority that the Olde Plough Inn is a great place to enjoy a bite to eat and a few traditional ales, but unfortunately, Covid-19 had other ideas and ensured that it was closed when I visited.

In driving home from Bere Ferrers I decided to take a little detour, and travelled across Dartmoor, to experience the bleakness of this landscape. I stopped off at car park (Pork Hill Car Park) and took a stroll up the hill to the summit.

From the top of Cox Tor you can see for many miles across Devon in all directions, including back to the rivers and estuary where we started our journey. Looking towards other hills and summits gives plenty of inspiration for future explorations.

Refreshments on my return was an ice cream from the ice cream van in the car park, which was very tasty indeed! Cox Tor was only the start of the drive through Dartmoor, there were a great many opportunities for exploration, which I'll be taking up when I return, hopefully in the not too distant future...

Here's some pictures from both Bere Ferrers and Cox Tor...
