Exploring Manchester

April 2021 · 2 min read · Manchester

Yesterday I posted some pictures of Yorkshire, in the north of England. Today we're going to cross the border, from the white rose of Yorkshire, to the red rose of Lancashire, and a visit to Manchester, home of the Happy Mondays and Coronation Street.

We were only there for a couple of days, the main aim being to take my Son to the Science Museum, where they have a fantastic collection of working steam engines. Unfortunately, we failed to do our research, and this part of the museum was closed. There was still a lot to explore in the museum, including working machinery from cotton mills, and a room full of vintage aeroplanes. It's also home to one of the oldest railway station buildings in the world, so still worth a visit regardless.

We took a tram out of the city to Salford, where we managed to check out the Media City, which includes the new BBC headquarters, as well as the Imperial War Museum, and the Lowry Collection in a theatre building.

Our evening was spent exploring the delights of China Town, where we had a meal in a Chinese restaurant. We enjoyed the sights and sounds of China Town, although I've had better Chinese food.

I last visited Manchester about 20 years ago, and it was fascinating to see how the city had changed. Everywhere you go the sky is full of cranes, with building work changing what was an industrial centre into a modern city. Salford in particular has transformed it's dockland area in a way that follows Londons Dockland area 20 years previous. I look forward to visiting again in the future to see how the city grows...
