If you are in Hanoi, don't hesitate to take a day trip to Haiphong just for a food tour. 90 mins on bus from Hanoi will bring you to a foodie wonderland in the north.

In past years, Haiphong city was known as big port city, city of development and city of "gang". xD. But now we young people just know Haiphong for its rich cuisine. We are willing to take a tour from Hanoi to Haiphong just for Haiphong food and go back with a full stomach.

There are so many good dishes here to put on the food recommendation list, such as Noodle with crab (Bánh đa cua), breadstick (bánh mì que), snail and oyster cooked in Haiphong style, ....

But this post is not for those above, but this one: steamed sticky rice with Chinese stewed pork. I dont know why its name becomes so long in english. lol. We just call it "Xôi thịt kho tàu".

It is not paid so much attention when people searching for Haiphong food. This dish is not known as a specialty of Haiphong since you can find Xôi thịt kho tàu in nearly everywhere in the north. But you should know that this one in Haiphong is in different level. Like what I said - it's insanely delicious.

What makes it different and stand out from among those dish having the same name?

Let me tell you.

The stewed pork was cooked in the different way. I don't know which way but it is kind of melting in your mouth once you taste it, so tender and juicy. You can feel the pork belly with perfect ratio of meat and fat, well marinated with chinese spices, herbs or whatsoever. It bring the amazing flavor that nothing can beat. Just describing it makes me mouthwatering. lol.

People love the stewed pork and almost forget another part of the dish which is not less impressive - steamed sticky rice. It's not white as normal but kind of ivory. It's not wet, but dry and of course sticky. A bowl of burning hot sticky rice, put on top some big pieces of stewed pork, pour a little bit soup left out from the pork, spread some homemade pâté, along with pickles. Is it perfect for breakfast of a winter day?
