Chao Phraya River & Rama VIII Bridge.

December 2019 · 5 min read · Samut Prakan Province

Yesterday been another beautiful day in the city of Bangkok i had decided to take a taxi boat up the Chao Phraya River not only because i wanted to check out the Rama VIII bridge close up and personal but it was a beautiful day to be on the river catching some Vitamin D and some fresh air.

To journey up the Chao Phraya River the easiest way is to take the BTS Skytrain to the Saphan Taskin station and just downstairs from the station is the Sathorn Pier take a taxi boat to Thewes Pier will cost you less the a dollar American ( 25 baht ) and it's about a 20 to 30 minute boat ride.

You will pass under the Rama VIII bridge on your way up the river to the bridge when you hope of at Thewes Pier you walk back to the bridge about 20 minute walk or you can take a Tuk Tuk from the Thewes Pier i chose to walk.

Stairways up to the bridge once your there.

This is the view from under the staircase before you walk up the stairs.

The views were amazing from top of the bridge looking down along the river. I have been living here in Bangkok for a while now been under this bridge by boat many times but today was actually my first time walking on top of this bridge the views were absolutely breathtaking let me tell you.

The Rama VIII Bridge is a cable stayed bridge crossing the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Thailand. The bridge has an asymmetrical design, with a single pylon in an inverted "Y" shape located on the western bank of the river.

The Bridge opened in 2002 and was one of the world's largest asymmetrical cable stayed bridges at the time of it's opening. It has a walkway and cyclist lane for people to enjoy the views it is one of the best sunset views in Bangkok looking over the river from standing on the Rama VIII Bridge.

Once you have walked across to the other end of the bridge you will find a nice green park this riverfront green space offers grassy areas, a playground, exercise equipment & monuments you can walk around or sit relax and enjoy the views of the river and the bridge from different angle.

A statue of Rama VIII King is in the middle of this park near the big cable-stayed bridge bearing the same name as the bridge it was built in honor of Rama VIII King.

The bridge connects the old town area (Visutkasat) with Arun Amarin area on another side of the river. The construction took around 3 years and it was eventually completed in 2002. The bridge was named after the late King Anada Mahidol and was inaugurated on his birthday.

Underneath the bridge you will find some food vendors with drinks , food and fruits. Also you will see kids enjoying practicing there skateboard tricks and others having a game of soccer using the bridge walls.

Time was getting on i did want to catch the sunset before heading back to the pier so i made my way back up to the bridge to get a couple of shots of the sunset before calling it the day.

Caught a couple of newly weds on my way out from the bridge doing a photo session.

One last photo under the bridge before walking back to the Thewes Pier.

Back at Thewes Pier now and a couple of night shots from the pier.

On the last taxi boat home which is 7pm and on my way back to Sathorn Pier to take the BTS Skytrain home. Just passing under this magnificent bridge once again only now it's night time.

The boat-filled Chao Phraya River feeds its network of canals, flowing past the Rattanakosin royal district, home to opulent Grand Palace and its sacred Wat Phra Kaew Temple. Nearby is Wat Pho Temple with an enormous reclining Buddha and, on the opposite shore, Wat Arun Temple with its steep steps and Khmer-style spire so you can really make a good day out along this river as you will never run out of things to see.
