Dallol Sulfur Ponds

August 2019 · 2 min read

From the camp of Asale Salt Lake to Dallol area it is not far away. All the way is like this saline-alkali land. Forgetting wearing sunglasses almost made me get snow blindness.

On the road we saw a tiny salt canyon. The guide told us that local people use it to make traditional medicine.

The aged is collecting the salt stones. Maybe he is claiming BTC ^^ O(∩∩)O He was so kind that he gave us two stones for free.

Few minutes later we saw a large red land, and there is a strong and repulsive smell of sulfur coming rushing from the land.

Those are salt and sulfur formations. Here is Dallol. The stone in the picture is called "the chair of Satan" by the local people. Our guide made fun of us to say it, "Sit down here, please!"

Dallol is a cinder cone volcano. There are many sulfur ponds and a lot of hot springs. The guide told us that we must walk very carefully so as not to fall down into the lake sulphate.

It is a hot spring. But unlike the one in the pictures above, we were able to touch the water. It was very smooth and thick. Our guide used all of our empty bottles to collect a lot of water and made them full. He said it is another medicine and it is valuable.

We drove back to our camp on the other road. This time we met a larger salt canyon that the one on the way we came.

Local people are collecting the salt bricks. The price of each salt brick is only 10 Birr. The camel caravans are are also moving around.

The Danakil Depression is the hottest area on the earth so we got darker when we were back to the capital.
