Cycle adventure across Europe #2: I guess we are criminals?

June 2019 · 2 min read

If I had to pick one thing that I hate the most in Europe(and the rest of the modern world for that matter) would be that everytime I would like to camp by a lake, in a forrest or a coast it is almost certainly by law illegal.

Sure we could go the capitalistic way and pay for a spot and a overcrowded camping site but I guess we just prefer the less civilized way of camping that sadly most of Europe won't allow.

I guess it just seem funny that there's a sign saying "no camping" while some major company down the road cuts down the forest for the sake of money.

Is it all in our head?

Of course most people don't care about this rule and even if they see you camping in a hidden side of a lake 99% are just gonna let you be or even start talking to us asking questions about where we are going. So in practice, it doesn't always feel illegal.

But it does not stop me after spending over 100 days wild camping to make the same feeling happen again and again: What if someone sees us? What if someone comes by? what excuse should I tell the police?

All these questions floating in my head, although they are completely unnecessary.. although not once I have been asked to move.

Of course, it won't stop us from doing it

Call us criminals if you well, I call us just people who like to take care and embrace the nature.
We will hide behind that little bush at a hill if that is what it takes to travel through Europe and still enjoy our nights in the nature!

Despite the law, it's worth it!

See you on the road!
