Holm's Europe bike tour diary: What are the ODDS?! (warning: Longer story)

June 2019 · 4 min read

Sometimes I feel like the universe, God or whoever might be controlling this planet are playing with us.

Sometimes chances of some stuff to happen are absolutely bizarre, so random, so surprising that it absolutely makes no sense when you think about it and when you try it just starts to confuse you even more.

This happened to me very fecenitly, and it has been a mind-boggling event. Not because it was anything major, just that I did not expect it to happen... at all.

So exactly 1 year ago I met these people...

Last year bike trip took me through Bratislava. In Bratislava I stayed at a hostel to explore and enjoy the city.

One evening I stumped upon 3 people of the same age as me. One guy who had a dream of building a campsite made of tree houses, his girlfriend who he werr traveling with and then their friend, a short brown haired girl who had joined them for a few weeks. They were all from France but back then I didn't know what city they came from and to me it didn't really matter too much.

We spend 1 evening together sharing cheese, wine and sharing a few stories. I truly enjoyed their company.

Next day we said goodbye and I never really heard from them ever again and I continued my bike trip towards România.

1 Year later on my route from Denmark to Portugal...

My girlfriend and I are now cycling through France and After changing our route about a hundred times we finally decided to go south, towards the Mediterranean coast. (we do indeed change our minds A LOT)

On the way we just so happened to know a friend in Lyon. So we decided while we were there to stay for a day or two to explore the city.

The city was wonderful and we were even invited by our friend to a local French bar where a bunch of young amateur French people would perform what they call a "Improvising theatre". In short they will attempt to make a performance on the spot without a script.

The bar was wonderfully charming. We could really feel how far away we were from any tourists in this small local bar. While we didn't understand much of what the performers were saying(they obviously spoke French) we still enjoyed the performance.

In the break I really had to pee so I went for the toilet, but of course there were only one toilet so I had to wait in a line.
Suddenly while waiting in line for the toilet. A short brown haired girl started asking me questions.

Especially asking my name and if I had 1 year ago been in Bratislava.
In the first few seconds I was super confused of why this girl would ask me these questions. But then I started recognizing her face, but could still not point a finger on from where I have seen her.

Suddenly it hit me:

This girl standing in the toilet line with me asking me these questions, in a small local bar somewhere in Lyon, France.

Is the very same girl I met in Bratislava one year ago.

and it just so happens all three of these lived in Lyon.

So I'm asking, what are the odds?!

What are the odds? Every choice from going south of France instead of North, to meet a friend in Lyon to go in exactly THAT bar out of a thousands other. To be there at that exact time that girl would be there, hell, even to recognize each other are absolutely crazy. So many people in this world yet I meet these guys again in a totally random fashion.

I love stories like these, they are one of the reasons I keep exploring and saying yes to opportunities that might not be logical. You never know what kind of surprises are waiting for you.

I ended up meeting them all next day for a beer.

And yes l, the guy who had a dream about building tree houses was already on it and was building his first prototype.

I guess the odds was in my favor that day.
