Barcelona again … The challenge of a one day business trip / Mal wieder Barcelona …

Barcelona ist eines meiner häufigsten und auch liebsten Reiseziele.
Meine ersten Auslands-Dienstreisen gingen in die Metropole, daher habe ich einen besonderen Bezug zu ihr. Es ist immer ein wenig wie nach Hause kommen, so verrückt das auch klingen mag.
Barcelona ist nach Hamburg die zweitgrößte Stadt Europas, die nicht gleichzeitig Hauptstadt ist und mit ihren etwa 4,8 Millionen Einwohnern fast so dicht besiedelt wie Paris.
Laut statistischer Daten kommen jedes Jahr etwa 7 Millionen Touristen in die Stadt, ich war jedoch lediglich erst einmal als Tourist dort und das ist bereits über 20 Jahre her.
Barcelona ist der Regierungssitz von Katalonien, die Region in der der größte Teil der chemischen Industrie in Spanien sitzt, daher lassen sich dienstliche Termine hier sehr gut bündeln.

Barcelona is one of my favourite and most frequent travel destinations.
I’ve already visited the city on my first business trips abroad,therefore I have a special relationship to it. It's always a bit like coming home, even though this might sound a bit weird.
After Hamburg, Barcelona is the second largest city in Europe, which is not at a capital at the same time and with its approximately 4.8 million inhabitants almost as densely populated as Paris.
According to statistical data, every year approximately 7 million tourists visit Barcelona. I was only once there as a tourist, more than 20 years ago, as I’ve just realised.
Barcelona is the seat of government of Catalonia, the region with most of the chemical industry in Spain, therefore official appointments can be bundled very well.

Flüge

Der früheste Flug aus Düsseldorf geht morgens um 6:30 Uhr, damit hat man einen wirklich langen Tag Zeit, den die Rückflug-Optionen sind seit der Air Berlin Pleite deutlich reduziert.
Während man früher noch am späten Nachmittag wieder zurück fliegen konnte, ist die einzige sinnvolle Lösung heutzutage 19:45 Uhr mit Ankunft kurz nach 22 Uhr. Massive Verspätungen, die hier zur Tagesordnung gehören, machen das ganze nicht komfortabler. Aber das ist halt Business, ich reise ja nicht zum Vergnügen. Leider.

Diesmal kam es allerdings noch etwas schlimmer. Der 6:30 Uhr Flug war bereits eine Woche vorher ausgebucht - was ich noch nie erlebt habe-, also hieß es Umsteigen in Frankfurt. So wird dann aus einem 2 Stunden Flug eine 3 1/2 Stunden Reise, die natürlich auch früher begann.
Mein Tag begann also schon um 3:15 Uhr, ja genau, 3 Uhr morgens. Andere sind vermutlich gerade erst zu Bett gegangen, da klingelte mein Wecker und ich musste mich aus dem Bett quälen. Meine Sachen packe ich vorsorglich schon immer am Abend zuvor, zum Glück, denn wach bin ich noch nicht, wenn ich das Haus verlasse.

Um Viertel nach vier holt mich das Taxi ab, um zwanzig vor 5 bin ich am Flughafen.
Wie schon bereits erwähnt geht die Reise über Frankfurt und um 9:35 lande ich pünktlich in Barcelona.
Da ich aufgrund zu vieler Termine leider nicht in die Stadt komme, habe ich ein paar Bilder aus dem Flugzeug geschossen. Der Blick auf die Stadt an Tagen mit klarem Himmel ist einfach großartig.

Flights

The earliest flight from Düsseldorf leaves in the morning at 6:30 a.m., so you’ve got a really long day, since the return flight options have been significantly reduced since Air Berlin went bankrupt.
While in the past you could fly back in the late afternoon, today the only sensible solution is 7:45 p.m. with an arrival time of 10 p.m.. Massive delays are quite normal, that doesn’t make the whole activity any more comfortable. But that's business, I don't travel for pleasure. Unfortunately.

But this time it was even worse. The 6:30 a.m. flight was already fully booked a week before - something I have never experienced before - so I had to fly via Frankfurt. In that way a 2 hour flight becomes a 3 1/2 hour journey, which of course starts earlier than the direct flight.
So my day started already at 3:15 a.m., yes exactly, 3 o'clock in the morning. Others probably just went to bed when my alarm clock rang and I had to torture myself out of bed. As a precaution, I always pack my things the evening before, fortunately, because I am not awake when I leave the house.

At a quarter past four the taxi picks me up, at twenty to five I arrive at the airport.
As already mentioned, the journey goes via Frankfurt and at 9:35 a.m. I arrive in Barcelona on time.
Since I don't have the possibility to visit the city, due to too many appointments, I took some pictures from the plane. The view from above on days with clear sky is simply great.

Barcelona von oben betrachtet

Man sieht deutlich den Hafen, mit dem großen segelförmigen W Hotel in dem eine Übernachtung ab schlappen 400 € zu haben ist. Das Hotel verfügt über allen möglichen Luxus, inklusive Privatstrand und Infinity-Pool.
Von innen habe ich das Gebäude leider noch nicht gesehen, bisher blieb mir nur es von außen zu bewundern.

Links liegt der Hausberg von Barcelona, der Montjuïc von dem aus man einen sagenhafen Blick über die Stadt hat. Auf der Rückseite befindet sich das berühmte Olympiastadion, welches vom Flieger aus leider nicht zu sehen ist, da man hier schon zu niedrig ist.
Oben auf dem Berg ist das Castell de Montjuïc, welches einst ein Militärgefängnis war und heute passenderweise ein militärhistorisches Museum beherbergt.

Etwas tiefer gelegen ist der Leuchtturm Far de Montjuïc. Es täuscht etwas, da der Turm in ein Gebäude integriert ist und daher überhaupt nicht wie ein traditioneller Leuchtturm aussieht.

Bedauerlicherweise kann man den** Cementiri de Montjuïc** auch nicht mehr erkennen. Er beginnt weiter hinten am südwestlichen Ausläufer des Berges. Der Friedhof, welcher im 19. Jahrhundert angelegt wurde, um Platz in der damals stark wachsenden Stadt zu sparen, ist gleichzeitig eine Parkanlage mit vielen kunsthistorischen Sehenswürdigkeiten und sehr beliebt bei Touristen. Schon von der Straße aus betrachtet ist die Anlage sehr imposant und auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert, nicht nur für Friedhofbegeisterte.

Weiter hinten in der Stadt, mehr nordöstlich, ist auch die Sagrada Familia zu erkennen. Auf Grund ihrer imposanten Größe ragt die unvollendete Kirche über alle Gebäude hinweg. 1882 begann Antoni Gaudí mit dem Bau und sie ist bis heute nicht fertiggestellt, dennoch schon zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe ernannt worden.
Gaudí is generell sehr präsent an allen Ecken der Stadt. Die Werke des Architekten prägen das Stadtbild maßgeblich und man kann eigentlich nicht durch die Straßen gehen, ohne wenigstens an einem seiner Bauwerke vorbeizukommen.

Das findige Auge kann sicherlich noch viele andere Sehenswürdigkeiten auf dem Foto ausmachen, leider war eine bessere Qualität der Aufnahme durch das Flugzeugfenster nicht möglich.

Barcelona from above

You can clearly see the port, with the big sail-shaped W hotel in which one overnight stay costs at least 400 €. The hotel has all kinds of luxury, including a private beach and an infinity pool.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen the building from the inside yet, so far I could only admire it from the outside.

To the left is the local mountain of Barcelona, the Montjuïc from the top, you get a legendary view over the city. At the back there is the famous Olympiastadion, which is not visible from the plane, since we were already too low at this stage.
At the top of the mountain is the Castell de Montjuïc, which was once a military prison and today appropriately houses a museum of military history.

A little bit lower is the lighthouse Far de Montjuïc. It is deceptive because the lighthouse is integrated into a building and therefore does not look like a traditional one at all.

Unfortunately, the* Cementiri de Montjuïc** somewhere behind the wing. It starts further back at the southwestern foothills of the mountain. The cemetery, which was built in the 19th century in order to save space in the strongly growing city, is at the same time a park with many art historical sights and very popular with tourists. If you look up from the street below the mountain, the park is already very impressive and definitely worth a visit, not only for cemetery enthusiasts.*

Almost in the middle of the city, more to the northeast, you can also see the Sagrada Familia. Due to its imposing size, the unfinished church rises above all buildings. In 1882 Antoni Gaudí started building the church and it has not been completed yet, but it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Gaudí is generally very present in all parts of the city. The works of the architect have a significant influence on the appearance of the city and you can’t actually walk through the streets without passing at least one of his buildings.

Somebody with better eyes than me, can surely make out many other sightseeings in the photo, I’m afraid, a better quality of the photo through the airplane window wasn’t possible.

Ein Arbeitstag in Barcelona und Umgebung

Nach meiner Landung geht es direkt zum ersten Termin. Mein Kollege, der vor Ort wohnt, holt mich am Flughafen ab, in dem Chaos am Terminal 1 laufe ich erst an Ihm vorbei, höre dann aber doch noch sein Rufen in meinem Rücken.
Bei unserem Termin werden wir herzlich empfangen, Kaffee gibt es aber keinen, auch kein Wasser, in Deutschland undenkbar, hier relativ normal und nicht böse gemeint. Man stellt sich darauf ein und trinkt vorher ausreichend. Nach 2 Stunden ausgedehnter Diskussion bin ich müde, erschöpft und vor allen Dingen sehr hungrig.
Es geht zum Mittagessen in ein spanisches Restaurant, wie üblich gibt es für kleines Geld ein Tagesmenü mit drei Gängen, bei dem man zwischen verschiedenen Varianten wählen kann. Je nachdem wo man gerade ist, kosten diese Menüs zwischen 10 und 25 Euro und beinhalten oft noch ein Getränk. Die traditionelle Crema Catalana zum Nachtisch tröstet mich dann auch ein wenig über den Schlafmangel.

A business day in Barcelona and surroundings

After landing, I went straight to the first appointment. My colleague, who lives in Barcelona, picked me up at the airport, in the chaos at Terminal 1 I first walk past him, but then I heard his shouting in my back.
At the first appointment we were warmly welcomed, but didn’t get any coffee, also no water, unimaginable in Germany, but here it is pretty normal and not meant badly. You get used to it and prepare yourself for it, with another water before the meeting. After 2 hours of extensive discussion I am tired, exhausted and above all very hungry.
We went to a Spanish restaurant for lunch, as usual there is a daily menu with three courses quite cheap, where you can choose between different options. Depending on where you are, these menus cost between 10 and 25 euros and often include a drink. The traditional Crema Catalana for dessert also comforts me a little about the lack of sleep.

Viel Zeit haben wir dann aber auch nicht, denn der zweite Termin wartet bereits.
Der langjähriger Kunde erwartet uns am Produktionsstandort, man kennt sich schon lange, entsprechend herzlich ist das Meeting und ich bekomme sogar Kaffee, weil ich ja so müde bin. Ein bisschen Mitleid erregen kann sich auch mal lohnen.
Ich liebe den spanischen Café solo, das Pendant zum italienischen Espresso.
Es hilft aber nur bedingt, auf dem Rückweg zum Flughafen fallen mir im Auto trotzdem fast die Augen zu.

But we don't have much time, the second date is already waiting.
The long-standing customer expects us at the production site, we know each other for a long time, the meeting is correspondingly cordial and I even get coffee because I am so tired.
I love the Spanish Café solo, the counterpart to Italian Espresso.
But it only helps to a certain extent, on the way back to the airport I almost fall asleep.

Flughafen El Prat Terminal 2

Zurück geht es vom Terminal 2 des Flughafens und dieses ist eher langweilig. Während Terminal 1 floriert, haben in diesem eher kleinen Ableger viele Shops im Laufe der Zeit geschlossen. Selbst der Desigual-Outletshop existiert nicht mehr und so kann ich mir zum Trost für verspätete Flieger, keine günstigen Handtaschen mehr kaufen.

Ein Highlight gibt es allerdings, seit einiger Zeit. Der Natura Shop lädt zum Stöbern ein.
Hier gibt es neben Kleidung aus Biobaumwolle auch viele Kleinigkeiten, sei es der Wasserball mit Globus Aufdruck, Metallstrohhalme für die Nachhaltigkeit oder Spardosen in Dinosauerierform für die Kids.

Airport El Prat Terminal 2

My return flight starts from terminal 2 and this one is rather boring. While Terminal 1 is flourishing, many shops in this rather small branch have closed down over the years. Even the Desigual outlet shop doesn't exist anymore and so I can't buy cheap handbags anymore as a consolation for delayed planes.

But there is a highlight, since some time. The Natura Shop invites you to browse.
Besides clothes made of organic cotton there are also many small things,like a water ball with globe imprint, metal straws for sustainability or money boxes in dinosaur form for the kids.

Außerdem mag ich das Motto des Ladens.

Der Rückflug war natürlich verspätet, wie sollte es auch sonst sein, aber ich will jetzt nicht weiter darüber klagen, schließlich bin ich noch nach Hause gekommen.
Beim nächsten Besuch habe ich hoffentlich etwas mehr Zeit und kann mit mehr Fotos aufwarten.

The return flight was of course delayed, what else, but I don't want to complain any more now, I finally arrived at home.
Hopefully I will have more time during my next visit and can come up with more photos.
