Week 1 - Beautiful British Columbia

Week 1 - Beautiful British Columbia

May 2018 · 3 min read

I know I'll look back on this and laugh one day...

Our 1977 GMC Security motorhome passed its safety inspection last Friday. We are now registered and on the road. And boy had I forgotten how stressful RV living can be.

We spent 3 days in Kelowna fixing things as they came up. I guess we were a little naive when it came to the condition of this car. Mechanically she seems excellent but we have discovered some major problems in the "home" part of this motorhome.

A valve in the toilet needed replacing. Easy enough. Then the hot water tank started leaking. No biggy, we thought. We'll just bypass the hot water tank and have cold showers. Then we tried to flush the waste water tank. It blew 2 holes. We've since had a go at repairing it. There's now 6 holes. The roof leaks in multiple places but we haven't had to sleep with buckets on our chests yet so that's a bonus.

At the end of the day, we have no running water but we have beds to sleep in, a kitchen to cook in, and a car to get us around. We have already found a couple of nice (and free) campgrounds along the way.

Begbie Falls Recreational Area, Revelstoke

Begbie Falls is a beautiful little rec area that allows overnight camping. The road in was a little bumpy but we made it down fine. And we were the only ones there! The surrounding forest is super lush and the creek running through was powering because of all the snow melt.

Kicking Horse River Crown Land, Golden

The camping at Kicking Horse River is right on the water and again, we had the place to ourselves for the night. We set up a fire and roasted s'mores over the flames. So good!

Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park

We stopped in at Emerald Lake on the way through Field. It looks so different this time of year! The lake is mostly still frozen but there was a little open water which made for some nice reflections.

Natural Bridge, Yoho National Park

Our last stop in British Columbia was at the Natural Bridge. It's a naturally formed rock bridge that crosses the Kicking Horse River.

Well our first week on the road was eventful to say the least. We are having a ball though and have already seen some amazing places.
