Undiscovered Ferrara

April 2018 · 2 min read · Ferrara

Hey, fellow Steemians!

During our road trip around Italy some time ago, we had a short stop in a town we haven’t yet talked about. It was only for a couple of hours but we did manage to get a feel of it as well as experience its pure Italian charm.

Ferrara is not that big but it has a wonderful old center dominated by a large open square. It’s (almost) car-free so you can carelessly wander around and enjoy the architecture. The streets are flat so if you can get your hands on a bike, that could be a perfect means of transportation to use to get around.

It was the middle of a (work)day but the streets were packed with people. Everyone seemed so energetic and full of life, both the youth and the elderly. Speaking of youth, Ferrara has a large university so don’t be surprised if you see a lot of young people around.

As we passed the main square we reached the Este Castle. The name is given to it by the famous Este family who ruled over Ferrara and the surrounding region for almost 3 centuries. Its stern and imposing look makes this castle the most iconic landmark in the town.

What we liked most about Ferrara are the secret back alleys hidden behind the main walking areas. As we took countless photos, it occurred to us that they are exactly how we imagined Italy to be like.
