Chichibugahama beach - Kagawa Pref in Japan

July 2019 · 2 min read · Mitoyoshi

One of the main destination in our last Shikoku trip was the Chichibugahama beach in Mitoyo city in Kagawa prefecture.

We found this beach in some guide book that, at low tide, offers stunning view of mirror effect formed by small puddle of water at the beach. The Chichibugahama is a 1 kilometre long beach at the northwest coast of Kagawa prefecture and everyday, it attracts hundreds of visitors during sunset. Everyone is trying to capture that insta-worthy photo or video.

Marketed by the local travel groups as the Japan's Uyuni Salt lake (the famous salt lake in Bolivia), the Chichibugahama soon became a must-go destination for visitors to Shikoku. We saw a TV programme in Japan where one of the member of Arashi visited this beach and came back with really nice photos and we decided to pin this place for our itinerary.

Under good conditions, one can really take some jaw-dropping photos. But unfortunately, several factors were not favourable for us during our visit. The wind was too strong resulting in much ripples on the water. Calm water is essential to get that mirror reflection effect. It was a weekend and there were so many people vying for the perfect spot. We could see tour groups, school children, families, and even modelling agencies there. Using an iPhone to video is also easy to capture the contrast of the sky and beach.

As the sun set, the tide rises and more water started to flood the water puddles on the beach. For a moment, we found ourselves stranded on the higher ground surrounded by incoming sea water. It was fun though!

Nevertheless, we had a great time in discovering this lesser known destination in Shikoku. Highly recommended for anyone who visit the area!
