Redondela: towards Santiago de Compostela by the Silver Way

Located on the southern margin of the Ría de Vigo and at an approximate distance of twenty kilometers from the capital Pontevedra, Redondela is a seafaring city, where all those pilgrims who go to Santiago de Compostela, following the so-called Route or Way of the Way of the Way Silver.

This route, possibly used long before the discovery of the Inventio or the supposed remains of the Apostle Santiago, was already a communication route, connecting Extremadura with the North of the Peninsula, being mainly used by farmers to move and feed their cattle, which constituted, in a metaphorical manner, the gold of the Neolithic.

It is not surprising that many of the ancient traditions, both popular and cultural and cultural, also coincide with those that can be found in communities such as Extremadura or Zamora, being, as we have said, this ancient route, known as Auriense a its passage through Orense.

Within the peculiarities of a city of interesting proportions, Redondela also retains that folk or popular side, where you can still find ancient vestiges of superstition, which survive evenly to Christian cults.

Therefore, it is not surprising, to find the typical cruises, which were usually located at the crossroads of the roads and served as propitious oratories for the roads, with breasts of souls - elements that were quite common in the North and little by little they disappear - where apart from the gifts to the deceased, the farmers also leave potatoes that have grown sick, in order to ensure a better supply in the next harvest.

It is the ambivalent side of religious hermeneutics, which can still be found in many cities, towns and villages in Galicia.

Within the old town of Redondela, it is worth noting the old Gothic palace, which currently serves as a pilgrim reception center.

But perhaps, the most attractive note, after all, is that purely marine part, in which the Port of Cesantes is located, in front of whose waters a small islet rises, whose history, comparatively speaking, could be considered as' the Hispanic Alcatraz '.

Indeed, on the Island of San Simón, vestiges of its unfortunate facilities are still preserved, since in the Middle Ages a leprosarium was placed in it and later a fort was built that from medieval times to relatively modern times, served as a prison.

Without being spectacular, its small beaches are also cozy and it is not difficult to see them full of summer vacationers and an attractive note, when not funny, could be seen in the cement of the port walkway, the footprints of the legs of the hundreds of Gulls that haunt, as a kind of career of fame, just as artists do with their hands on Hollywood Boulevard.

It also has a privileged situation, since Redondela is located in the vicinity of Sotomaior - whose residence used to spend the summer the former president of the Government, Mariano Rajoy - and tourist attractions, such as Pazos de Borbén and Mondariz, with its spectacular seaside resort.
