Segovia, where the Devil is a bricklayer

Segovia, where the Devil is a bricklayer

February 2019 · 2 min read · Espirdo

Spain is a country of legends. The legends, which like everything in life, also have their share of truth, are the folklore of the people. It is difficult to travel to any town or city of this old bull skin, which is the Iberian Peninsula, and not be fascinated by the legends and popular traditions, which are still very present, especially among the oldest of the place.
Segovia, located a little over an hour and a half from Madrid, not only has the merit of being one of our World Heritage Cities, but also Candido and its famous roast suckling pig, has an interesting amount of legends. A few days ago, the factual powers shouted in the sky, because they wanted to put a statue of the Devil at the foot of its famous Roman Aqueduct: a wonderful work of engineering, which still retains much of its ancient splendor.

There was nothing heterodox in the subject, but a continuation of the tradition, aimed at attracting even more, if possible, the tourist interest to the place. Because, as in many other places - the castle of Trasmoz, for example - the people, surely encouraged countless centuries ago by the Church, always blamed the construction of the Aqueduct on the Devil himself. Which is the same as saying that everything before Christianity was imposed was decidedly demonic.

Possibly because of this, in the upper arches - and everyone who goes as you can see - a Marian image was placed, whose characteristics, curiously, are very similar to what in the church -templary? - of the Vera Cruz is known as the Virgin of Peace. The Devil can be many things. But would you have imagined that he is also Master Bricklayer?.
