Sukhothai Kingdom Kingdom - what is now part of Thailand

May 2020 · 2 min read · Sukhothai Province

You think of Thailand and how the country evolved over the centuries of rulers vs other rulers and eventually Siam become the Country of Thailand in 1939. But before this there were various regional influences or Kingdoms and today we talk about one of those Kingdoms - Sukhothai in the central/western part of Thailand today.

My family and I visited the Sukhothai Kingdom and walked thru history. Literally walked thru what was one of the regional kingdoms in power that spanned the 1238-1448 years.

Some say Sukhothai is really the birth place of when Thailand was created before officially becoming a country many years later.

The blackish gray ruins tell a story of a Kingdom that flourished in customs going back to the Khmer Empire. The Khmer’s built many monuments.

Today, these are grounds of the Sukhothai Historical Park. You walk on stone walkways and some walls that have stood the test of time.

You walk thru the ruins and imagine what was life like in these times. Each ruler of a Kingdom defending itself. These ruins tell the story of Thailand.

The blackened walls, monuments and figures were built over 700 years ago.

Over the centuries there were pockets of various Kingdoms. Sukhothai became a tributary to the Ayutthayan Kingdom in 1378 and merged with them in 1438. Subsequently, Ayutthaya became the capital.

Today as you visit you can take rides through this historical park. Thailand recognizes the importance of Sukhothai in it’s history. It is place where people go to understand Thailand before it was country.
