10 Second Travel Logs #4: Sandboarding the Coral Pink Sand Dunes in Utah

February 2018 · 3 min read

Welcome To Another Episode of 10 Second Travel Logs!

Y'all, this is the place to shred. Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is located in Kanab, Utah, just slightly above the border with Arizona. We incorporated it into our road trip up from Phoenix, so it's really easy to hit up if you are visiting the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and all those other incredible sights in northern Arizona.

And I'd also never gotten to board on sand before, so that made this even more epic. Now I might not be an incredible boarder, but the setting...man, that was incredible. It was 80 degrees, sunny, and clear out. Also, the winds were going strong, which helped you pick up speed, kept things very interesting if they swirled, and also kept shifting the peaks of the dunes.

And....most importantly....there was plenty of wax for our boards! It was gnarly. We were getting those boards slick, trying to help generate as much speed as we could down the dunes.

If you haven't tried sandboarding, you've gotta do it. There is nothing like being warm while boarding, and the effort it takes to climb to the top of dune every time you make a run makes it that much more rewarding on the way down...even if you wipe out! Also, sitting on top of the dunes and watching the sand shift in the distance is truly epic.

Finally, a couple pro tips for you. Don't chew gum while sandboarding, because when you wipe out, you'll be crunching sand....learned that one the hard way! Also, if the wind gets crazy, cover those eyes! I was so stoked to make a final run down the biggest dune out there that I finally climbed all the way up and dropped in with a mini sandstorm going on (winds got up to 50 mph) and thought I was I the dust bowl or something...was totally blinded, but I'm stoked to report I made it 3/4 of the way down Dunezilla before wiping out!

Also, I apologize, but we were so stoked to be out there that we barely even got any footage, just were trying to shred and conquer the dunes the whole time. However, a friend we made there happened to film this video for me, so we've got a quick travel log shot!
