Mexico in HD (Isla Mujeres, Xpuha, Tulum)

June 2018 · 4 min read

SO STOKED to release this edit to @dtube of the brand new footage I shot in Mexico on my last trip in 3 epic locations: Isla Mujeres, Xpuha, and Tulum!

I shot over 3 total hours of footage during 5-6 days of on and off filming (in between hours of beach volleyball, exploring, swimming, and chillin....man, take me back), and I'm stoked with how it turned out, and with the shots that made it into this edit.

Now, a little bit more about the spots, in case you want to visit!

Isla Mujeres is a narrow, 7km wide island that rests about 13km off the coast of Cancun, in the Caribbean Sea. And the coolest part about it is that right before sunset, when all the tourists return on to mainland Cancun on their ferries, the island takes on a very tranquil, serene, and culturally traditional feel, with mostly only locals around. You really begin to feel like it's another night on a sleepy island out at sea, away from the hustle and bustle of the real world. That, and the island itself is absolutely incredible, with countless shades of turquoise water, incredible Mexican cuisine, and warm, friendly locals. Also, you can catch the sunrise at Punta Sur (South Point), and then end the day catching the sunset at Playa Norte (North Beach), which is well known as the best beach on the island, no less! Talk about a perfect day.

Next, Xpuha is a lesser known beach that is just off the main Federal Highway when driving south from Playa del Carmen towards Tulum. You need to ride in a Colectivo (the ubiquitous vans that run local routes between towns and are full of locals, sometimes so many that you're one of up to 3 people standing when the seats run out, and you're still barely able to move. But, it's really an authentic experience, and I've traveled in Collectivos on every one of my 8-9 trips to Mexico. I would recommend being a Spanish speaker if you travel by Collectivo, however. Anyway, Xpuha is just a stop on the side of the road, and you won't even see it if you don't tell your Collectivo driver that is your destination. You'll get dropped off on the side of the road (that's why buses don't stop here), then cross the highway, and look for one sign, that will lead you down a quarter kilometer path, which after passing an entry gate, will reveal...paradise. Trust me, it's incredible. The opening pelican flying shot and a number of others show off the incredible waters of Xpuha.

Finally, Tulum. What can I even say. It's like something out of a dream. There is a Mayan Castle on the top of a cliff, overlooking some of the bluest waters you will ever see in your life. About as picture perfect as it can get. Which is also why it has seen so many more tourists and visitors since I first visited 3 years back, when my group of friends had an entire half kilometer of the beach to ourselves, in the middle of the afternoon. Ah the good ole days...and that's at the public beach, where I filmed for this video, where you have kilometers of white sand and turquoise water that are all part of the incredible nature reserve. That's also where the archaeological site meets the nature reserve, as you can see in the view from above that I shot, past the Do Not Pass (No Pasar) marking!
