Dniester estuary

September 2019 · 2 min read · Odesa Oblast

We spoke for cities, villages, streets and houses. But they spoke very little for the ponds. Now we will go for the Dniester estuary.

The place where it is located and some official information

This bay is located in the northwest of the Black Sea coast. The Dniester flows into it just the same.

It extends into the land from the southeast, toward the northwest for 41 kilometers. Width is from 4 to 12 kilometers. Depth: 2.6 meters. The estuary itself is not separated from the sea by a wide oblique - Bugaz. In the southern part there is a small passage to the Black Sea.

In winter, it freezes. The ports are located on the banks of the estuary: Belgorod-Dniester and Ovidiopol. Here you can also highlight the Karagol Bay.

Estuary during the Great Patriotic War

Estuary played an important strategic role. In 1941, during the defense of Odessa, Soviet troops were defending along the east coast. In 1944, fascist-Romanian troops were defending along the west coast. At the start of the Iasi-Chisinau operation, the estuary was successfully boosted by the Danube Flotilla.

Present day

The estuary plays not only a strategic role. It is a great place to relax. Here you can not only go fishing, but also relax on a yacht. By the way, you can rent both in the port of Odessa, and in Belgorod-Dniester.

Belgorod-Dniester is a city that has seen more than one battle in its lifetime. But we will talk about the Akkerman fortress later. There is something to say the words.

By the way, a beautiful view of the estuary opens from the fortress. One gets the impression that the waters are always calm. That there were no bloody battles. Yes, the fresh wind that fills the sails of the yacht is refreshing and allows you to enjoy your vacation.

Without regretting 80 hryvnias, I went on a tour of the Akkerman fortress. I'll tell you for her next time. Now I will say that from the fortress wall a beautiful view opens over the estuary. I bring to your attention a few photos.
