Day out in Yui, Shizuoka

March 2023 · 2 min read · Shizuoka

We went to a town called Yui to see some cherry trees in bloom recently. Before we went, I checked around the town for other things to do there, so we could spend a few hours there doing several other things.

Yui Harbour and Sakura Ebi

Sakura ebi are a type of small shrimp which can only be caught in Yui. Recently the ocean currents have been changing and the years when the shrimp come near the coast are getting less and less, but in 2023, the shrimp are here again. We tried Sakura ebi fry, and Sakura ebi sashimi bowl at the harbour restaurant.

The harbour isn't very picturesque though, surrounded by busy roads, so just go for the food.

Kawazu Sakura have vivid pink flowers and bloom earlier in the year (February – March). There are many Kawazu Sakura trees lining the streets up on the hills overlooking the ocean, which make it a nice site to see. Also, its not a particularly popular place, so its quiet too.

Tokaido Hiroshige Art MuseumLooking for an offbeat destination in Japan? Consider visiting the Tokaido Hiroshige Art Museum, located in Shizuoka Prefecture. Dedicated to the works of ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige, this museum houses a collection of woodblock prints depicting life on the Tokaido road during Japan's Edo period. The impressive collection includes over 1,000 prints spanning the length of the famous road from Tokyo to Kyoto. Don't miss the chance to see the original print of "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido," which is considered one of Hiroshige's greatest masterpieces. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum offers special exhibitions and workshops featuring other ukiyo-e artists. A must-visit for art lovers and history buffs alike!

Yui Sake Brewery

The sake brewery near the sea is small, but you can buy their nice sake there, the staff will tell you which sake is best for your taste buds. Also, the sake here is not so expensive, and has a good taste.
