Westminster Abbey

Hello Steemians

One of the most popular tourist sites in London.
Originally founded by Benedictine monks in 960 AD.
The current structure was begun by Henry III in......

1245 AD.
Every coronation since 1066 AD has taken place here, and
is the last resting site for 17 monarchs.
As well as a number of Knights and aristocrats were buried inside chapels,
and Monks and others were buried in the cloisters......many of the tomb
markers are very worn, which is a shame, due to the large volume of
tourists walking over them........

every day.
Henry VIII took control of the Abbey in 1540 and gave it
cathedral status, thus saving it from destruction, or dissolution,
like many of the Abbeys at that time.
Below is a view of the cloisters, and behind in the distance in
the upper right corner is Victoria's tower, part of the
House of Parliament.

The chapter house, constructed around 1245, is an octagon shaped
part of the abbey.
Still has the original 13th century tile floor, and amazing stain glass panels.
This is the place where the original commons was held, which preceded
parliament of today.
In a vestibule leading to it is the oldest door in England dating.......

back to 1050 AD.

There are a number of rooms in the Abbey, including the Pyx, the oldest
part of the structure that use to hold the coins produced by the mint.
Take a good look at the doors to the Pyx, as thick and solid as they could be made.
The best view is from the Queens gallery. There is an elevator, or as the
English call it a "lift" if you need it, and admission is an extra cost of 5GBP,
and is the best 5GBP you will spend in London. An excellent view and
many artifacts and art, effigies, clothing and a replica set of the crown jewels
as well as a good look at the supporting structure, and a few surprises.
Pic is from google.
Westminster Abbey is a must see if visiting London.
But please purchase tickets online for 17GBP and save a few dollars.
We were there a half......

hour before opening and the line was long, ticket holders
had a separate line and we went in first, it was like we
had the place to ourselves. When we were leaving
the crowd was shoulder to shoulder.
A audio guide is included with the price, and has 11 language
selections on it.
Definitely get the Queens gallery ticket as well.
Closest tubes are Westminster and St James's Park.
