Hochkönig: Super surprised in a positive way

Hochkönig: Super surprised in a positive way

February 2019 · 2 min read

I guess I am a creature of habit. Up untill this year I had not skied that much in Austria because the altitude of the skiing areas is a bit too low what I find. That means your guarantee of snow isn't always there, so because of that I would rather choose to go to a more snow secure area like Ischgl or Sölden.

This also means that a bit of smaller areas are a big mystery to me, and being this week in Austria feels like one big discovery trip of hidden gems. Todays destination: the Hochkönig region.

This region is again multiple villages connected to each other with around every corner a totally new sight and vibe. This really feels like you are finding a new spot every second. And most weird thing to see: enough untouched powder for freeriders which is weird, because the last snowfall was already a week ago.

What I was also surprised about to see was the enormous amounts of snow that were still there. Dienten (the middle village) is called a snowloch, which means that it often snows there a lot more than in the surrounding villages and this was clearly to see. Even though the temperatures were reaching ridiculous heights this week the snowpack here wasn't suffering too much under this heat and it was still stuper pleasant to ski. Also the roofs of the buildings were still covered with 2 meters minimum of snow imagine how much has fallen here this winter.

A staggering 12 degress Celsius and I even saw it warmer. Nice to be wearing 2 jackets and an sweater and gloves (not)

We weren't sure on how the conditions would be today so we didn't really plan to much on where to go. It turned out to be a really nice and decent trip with a nice 50 kms in 4,5 hours, with getting a good impression of the region.

Honestly, I think I might even come back here, or at least recommend it to every one who wants to get out of the crowd and into the calm. Because even in this high season week, the amount of people waiting in lines and on the pistes was really not too bad I must saw.

Hochkönig Region, you get a big phat YAY from me!
