The ancient ruins of My Son, Vietnam

August 2019 · 3 min read

When travelling in the Hoi An region in central Vietnam, it is almost not an option to pass by the My Son temple complex, and you totally be spammed throughout your whole trip that you have to go there.

I don't know how that is for you when you are travelling, but when I hear those words that you have to go, I always get a little bit itchy, and it makes me not want to go at all. Because when you hear those words, that means that the place will be covered with people who are all just snapping around like madmen, not paying attention to anything except for the pictures that they are making. Not too appealing if you ask me.

So, I looked up what was most promoted on going on a tour towards the My Son temples, and the concusion was that all tours started as early as possible in the morning. First of all, I don't like tours. I like to do everything at my own pace. This can mean racing through something if it isn't too appealing, or take more time for something if I like it, and a tour doesn't really allow this. So we decided not to take a tour, but go by ourselves AND going as late as possible, an hour before closing time.

The My Son ancient ruins are temples hidden in the Vietnamese mountains which used to be the city of an emperor somewhere between the 4th and 12th century. A broad guess don't you think? Apart from that they were abondened a long time they also took a pretty hard beating in the Vietnamese war from the bombing of the Americans. You can still see the impact holes of the bombs everywhere. Luckily a lot of the details of the ruins are still to be found. Just look at those details!

So after reaching super late in the afternoon already when the sun was already dropping, the park was almost empty. Electrical carts will bring you from the entrance of the park to the actual ruins and the idea already that this was an extremely overcrowded park in the morning made me happy with the decision of going later. There was enough room and time to visit the ruins, and 1.5 hour turned out to be enough to see what we wanted to see. A wise decision going later

So if you ask me my general opinion on going to the My Son temple complex?? I would say, definetely go there! They are built in the same style as the Angkor Wat temples in Cambodia only these are smaller and not so good preserved, but remember...These ruins have been bombed severely and that also gives an extra dimension to these ruins I find. I was impressed by the complex, and I would surely recommend you to got there. Just make sure that you visit at a quiet hour, and in the mornings that isn't!
