Hey guys,

today there is only a small post from me about our trip to the Arco della Pace - a triumphal arch on the Piazza Sempione in the area of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. From the Castello Sforzesco we first went to the adjacent park Parco Sempione (I told you about it in my last Post) to cool down and relax a little. Then we walked through the park until the park ended at one point and we had the Arc de Triomphe a few meters in front of us - very practical!

Which I found very pleasant: There were hardly any tourists here and the space around the peace arch is very large. From some places, you can even watch the triumphal arch from the park and you still have a clear view.

Shortly a little bit to history of the triumphal arch: The triumphal arch should be built as a new entrance gate to Milan, after Napoelon had appointed himself the king of Milan. In 1807, under Napoleon's rule, work began on the triumphal arch.

It is designed so that Napoleon, when he came to Milan from Paris over the Simplon Pass, could pass the Arc de Triomphe.

Bronze figures created by famous artists are enthroned on the triumphal arch itself, which is about 25 metres high. The Sestriga "Minerva of Peace" is by Abbondio Sangiorgio and the "Four Winners on Horseback" by Giovanni Putti.

The classicistic building based on Roman models is crowned by a goddess of peace with her six-horse chariot. The numerous marble reliefs on the triumphal arch show scenes from the Napoleonic wars of liberation.

After the fall of Napoleon, the triumphal arch was abandoned for the time being and was only completed in 1838 as the Arco della Pace, the arch of peace. Napoleon did not live to see its completion. The Arco della Pace got a different meaning and reminds on the European Peace of 1815.

I hope you enjoyed my Post, even though it was relatively short this time. That's mainly because there's not really much to do except to admire the triumphal arch and take lots of pictures ;)

Even if there is not really much to discover here, I can also highly recommend a little side trip to the triumphal arch. The architecture is very beautiful, as it is the case of almost all buildings in Milan. If you are already in the park or visiting the castle, a little excursion to the Arc de Triomphe is definitely worthwhile. But it is not worth a day excursion, it is better to plan approximately half an hour for the viewing, the time is then already well calculated.

From the Castello Sforzesco, the impressive Arco della Pace can be reached by foot in about twenty minutes. A good contrast to the always very busy Castello. Those who do not want to walk back, jump into the historical tram.

I'm looking forward to my next Post which will be about Milan too, be curious :)
