today I tell you about a church we visited in Mallorca! The church is called Sant Jaume and is located in the city of Alcudia. What fascinated me very much about the parish church: it is integrated into the city wall and is the emblem of the north east coast of Mallorca. I have never seen a church that is integrated into a city wall until now!
The stunning church Església de Sant Jaume
Above the main portal of the one-nave church, which was built in the middle of the 13th century, there is an elaborately worked rose window (it is one of the main features of the church and therefore the church has a special recognition value). The main attraction in the interior is the mighty baroque altar with the legendary cross of the Holy Christ of Alcudia, which is carried through the streets in a large procession every three years, on the name day of the city's patron saint. Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures of the church inside. I am not sure anymore, but I think it was not allowed at that time.
In fact, at the beginning we only wanted to visit the historical old town, but then we got stuck at the church ;))
I would definitely say that one of the most beautiful buildings in Alcúdia is the parish church Església de Sant Jaume. It is located at the southwestern edge of the old town. The present church was built in the neo-gothic style between 1882 and 1893. It is consecrated to Saint James. Jaume II. was the builder. Attached to the church is the baroque Capella del Sant Crist. It is visited by many pilgrims, to the crucifix Christ of Alcúdia.
As you can see, the weather on the day we visited the church was not so good (To be honest, the first sunny pictures are not from me, but I just had to show you the church in sunshine - it looks so much better! But don't worry, it's the first time I'm doing something like this and I'm allowed to use the pictures legally ;) ), I hope you can still get a good impression of the church with the pictures ;)
By building the church into the big and massive city wall the church reminded me a lot of a fortress, fortified and protecting. Through the main entrance one enters the church through a relatively simple portal. In the interior there are, besides the elaborately designed main altar, several beautifully crafted side altars. In the side chapel (to the right of the main altar) there is (behind an altar) a wooden cross that is venerated as miraculous and to which pilgrims come again and again.

Important: When we were there, the church was open, but that was just luck! The church is not always open, only during services and at fixed opening hours. During opening hours the church can be visited for a small fee.
Alcudia itself
From Palma de Mallorca you can reach Alcudia, which is about 60 kilometres away, by taxi, public transport or a rental car. Alcudia has a Mediterranean climate, which is characterized by dry, hot summers and short, humid winters. The best time to travel in Mallorca is the same as in Alcudia. The months from April to September offer you optimal conditions for an excellent holiday in the north of the island. We had rather bad weather (see pictures), but I think we just had bad luck and it is an absolute exception there!
Alcudia offers not only a great parish church built into a city wall, but an incredible scenery with majestic mountain ranges and indescribably beautiful sandy beaches. The river winding through the city and the big harbour make the cityscape even more beautiful!

In Alcudia there are many other great places to visit!
It was the former economic centre and is one of the oldest cities of Mallorca. Therefore it has a historic centre, so the beautiful old town of Alcudia should not be missing on my list of tips. The townscape is dominated by a preserved city wall and in some places offers the unique opportunity to look over the roofs of the city. You should not miss this (look at the photos ;).
There are beautiful and winding car-free alleys, and around them many bars, restaurants and cafes.
