In last post, we enjoyed a dance video and have an impression on the Dunhuang murals. Today, we will explore this amazing exhibition in detail. The exhibition is hosted in Xuhui Art Museum, No.1413 Huaihai Mid Road. This old house, built in 1932, formerly known as Hongying Library, opens in 2005.
《史记·乐书》中写道：仁近于乐，义近于礼。乐者敦和，率神而从天；礼者辨宜，居鬼而从地。故圣人作乐以应天，作礼以配地。礼乐明备，天地官矣。从而可见，礼乐是自古以来非常严肃庄重的仪式，在敦煌壁画中也有多处表现，这个展览就是以此作为专题。
According to Historical Records, "benevolence" is the core of music and "justice" is the core of rite. The rite-music cultural is displayed in various parts of Dunhuang murals and becomes the topic of today's exhibition.

After going through the "time tunnel", you will walk into the exhibition hall.
从左到右分别是“腰鼓舞”、“反弹琵琶舞”和“绸带舞”。

中唐 榆林窟第25窟 南壁观无量寿经变中的乐舞
Mid Tang Dynasty, Yulin Grottoes Cave 25, Illustration of Amitayurdhyana Sutra
这组乐舞左右两侧各有四名乐伎伴奏，中间的腰鼓舞伎双臂横展，作蓄势击鼓状；下身吸提左腿，仿佛正要腾跳回转，长巾顺势卷出8字绸花，整个舞姿矫健激昂。八名迦陵频伽乐伎拿着的乐器从左到右分别为：琵琶、笙、筚篥、海螺、竖笛、横笛、排箫和拍板；中间的两名舞伎分别拿着腰鼓和曲项琵琶。
In this scene, four musicians stand on each side accompanying. The waist drum dancer in the middle opens her arms as if she is ready to beat the drum. The long scarf on her arms rolls in "eight-shaped" pattern silk flower, which enhances the motion of the dancer and makes the dance more strong, vigorous and exciting. The eight musicians beside her are playing Chinses musical Instruments, from left to right: Pipa, Sheng, Bili, Conch Shell, Clarinet, Flute, Pandean Pipes and Clappers; the two dancers in the middle are playing Waist Drum and Curve-necked Pipa.
