Against all nature`s laws: Where water climbs the hill

Against all nature`s laws: Where water climbs the hill

February 2021 · 3 min read · Taitung County

It's very difficult to discribe what you're seeing, when you in Doulan, Donghe Township, at the east cost of Taiwan. There is a parking lot and after that you're going upwards a street, upwards in a way you can feel in your legs. It's really upwards, only a few meters away from the highway – and all the rest is a true miracle. What makes us stunning is not much moren than a narrow channel in the surface, 40 centimetres wide and half full of water.

Looking up the hill: How can this be, my god?
Looking up the hill: How can this be, my god?

But what kind of water! When you're looking back down where you come from, you see the parking lot and the small hill – and the channel, who is going upwards. And the water flows with it. Really.

Disregard the laws of gravity

In seeming disregard of the laws of gravity, the water in the 1.8 km irrigation channel from Dulan appears to flow upwards. Up the hill, into a small garden at the top. Those who have reached th top can look down at their car. No doubt: This is below. We're up.

But the water ihas climbed the mountain with us. Beside the channel, a stone tablet inscribed with the word "Miracle" has been erected due to this mysterious phenomenon that you will take for real when you're staying in front of it. You can go all the way along the channel further upwards, everey step feels like a step on a stairway. But the gravity you feel seems like it isn't the same one to witch the water is exposed.

Upwards it goes
Upwards it goes

As the saying goes, "Man goes up while water runs down" the applies it everywhere else, but not in this place of wonders.

Is god making a joke? Or are the laws of nature out of control? No, they aren't. It's only a perfect optical illusion made by mother nature herself with no reason: Because of the shape of the hill and the pathways around the scenerie the „Water going upwards“ showplace was made.

Is it not what it seems

When you take your smartphone and investigate the case with the help of Google Maps like a detective of CSI you wil find out that the real world deceives you and you smart eyes terrible. The upwards-water in reality is going downwards as it must be. Only optical this isn't true: The human beeing, accustomed to relying on his senses, is left here by them.
