Caribian Feeling: The Blue Lagoons of Mallorca

Caribian Feeling: The Blue Lagoons of Mallorca

June 2022 · 6 min read · Balearic Islands

Olive groves, hidden gorges, panoramic views and the most beautiful mountain villages of the island: a charming long-distance hiking trail leads away from mass tourism across Mallorca's wild Tramuntana mountains.

We want to hike the Tramuntana mountains complete - a hard way, dry and beautiful. Follow me all the way to the other side of a well known and complete unknown isle - today we're on a hidden beach.

(Please read chapter one here, chapter two here, three here, four here and fivesix & seven

Everyone has an image of Malloca in their head. Party, sangria, disco and crowded beaches, that's what the Ballearian island stands for, cheap vacation among countless people looking for the same thing on narrow sandy beaches: fun and the sound of endless parties, cheap accommodation and streams of beer.

That the island in the Mediterranean also has a completely different side, learns who sets out to leave the crowded places of mass tourism. On a hike across the Tramuntana mountains, for example, you will hardly meet other people - but also, who just wants to swim and lie in the sun, will find hidden places not far from the island's capital Palma, of which the party tourists will probably - and hopefully - never know.

Paradise of the white sand

The Platja de Ses Roquetes, for example, is a huge, fine-sand beach. The first row of dunes is covered with white sea lily, sea thistle, pine trees, sade trees and wild olives, also you can watch birds. To get here, you have to leave the car in Colònia de Sant Jordi and walk. Another possibility is to start walking from Cap de Ses Salines, then the route is a rough six kilometers long.

But every step is worthwhile. The sand is covered with neptune grass and branches brought in by the sea, the sea blue as in the Caribbean. A lagoon that you would otherwise only find thousands of kilometers away in South America or Asia. Nevertheless, it is empty here, because you walk 2.3 kilometers from Platja d'es Port in Colonia Sant Jordi to this quiet paradise - a way too long for the normal Mallorca tourists.

Because it's a march under a glaring sun, going uphill and downhill, challenging your feet as much as your legs. You will have a few of beautiful views to the sea and the landscape. But there is no road leading here, so finally you are alone with nature in a very beautiful landscape, with a lot of tranquility, and away from any party life.

People are bathing naked

Logically, this beach is not cleaned here of course like the official and commercial ones of the island of all natural pollution. In addition, there are here and there washed on amounts of plastic and who bothers that people are bathing naked should stay away.

This is true too from the Platja de es Carbo, another wonderfully enchanted sandy beach in the south of Mallorca, very close to the resort of Colònia de Sant Jordi. You just have to walk a bit further to get to this part of the beach, which is more secluded and even emptier, because visitors can only reach it if they leave Platja de Ses Roquetes behind, which hardly anyone does, because it is already nice and empty there.

But here we have a real paradise for bathers who are looking for peace and quiet and want to enjoy the beautiful view of the sea shining in blue and green. The conditions are fantastic: fine sandy beach, clear water, shallow slope and all around a beautiful natural landscape of shrubs and pine trees.

Families with children can also enjoy the beach of the two bays, the trees provide a lot of shade, the water is shallowly sloping and the large sandy areas offer enough space to build sandcastles.

No stores, no supermarkets

But: There are also no service facilities here - neither sunbeds, umbrellas nor a beach bar line the bay area. Also, everyone has to bring their own drinks and food, because in the hinterland of the bays there is nothing but sea lilies, pine trees and olive trees. No store, no supermarket, nothing.

A highlight is also the view of the island of Cabrera and the small island of Na Moltena, which lie off the south coast. The largely uninhabited nature and marine reserve presents an impressive backdrop of rocks and sparse tree growth. Also exciting are the numerous caves that visitors can discover there if they have a boat to take them across.Alternatively, a boat shuttle runs from the port of Sant Jordi, stopping in the bay to let bathers off.

A nice day trip

It’s incredible

For those who enjoy nature and hiking, feel free to explore the southern coastal region of the island in more detail and take the path from the port to the coves. Passing beautiful flora and fauna along the coast, the "excursion dream bay" is a nice day trip, which is rewarded with tranquility, magnificent views and cooling off in the crystal clear water.
