The lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca (ENG)
Hi friends, in the past I have already published a post on the lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca therefore in this post I will use unreleased shots that I have not previously published.
The Santa Maria di Leuca lighthouse is a very beautiful and impressive lighthouse.
The lighthouse is located on a promontory called "Punta Meliso" and is at a height of 102 meters above sea level.
Its ground clearance is around 48 meters.
It was built in 1864 and is one of the tallest lighthouses in all of Italy.
It is a white lighthouse with an octagonal structure.
The material used to build it is tuff.

The year of construction of the lighthouse is 1864 while the first lighting dates back to 1866

To get to the top of the lighthouse you need to climb 254 steps.
Every year I spend vacation days in Santa Maria di Leuca but I have never visited the lighthouse because it is located in a military area.
In fact, the management of the lighthouse is entrusted to the Italian navy and to visit it it is necessary to have an authorization from the ministry of defense.

The area where the lighthouse is located is very beautiful and full of points of artistic and cultural importance.
In fact, a few meters from the lighthouse there is a Marian Column: construction of 1694.

In the same square in the center of which the Marian Column is placed there is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca.

In front of the entrance of the Sanctuary, on the other side of the square there is a Monumental Cross.

About 50 meters from the Monumental Cross there is a Monumental Waterfall.

The following photo I took from the waterfront, from here you can see the promontory "Punta Meliso", the lighthouse, the Monumental waterfall, the marina and the beautiful and clear sea.

The lighthouse is a symbol of Santa Maria di Leuca.
If you visit Santa Maria di Leuca the visit to the lighthouse and the area on which it stands is a mandatory stop.
I conclude the post with a poem by the poet Cosimo Russo who died in 2017.

This poem is placed on a plaque at the beginning of the Leuca promenade.

Leuca at dawn
They emerge with the sun
Leuca
and its waves
and the motionless
Lighthouse
rests as mute.

Leuca all'alba
Sbucano col sole
Leuca
e le sue onde
e l'immobile Faro
riposa come muto.
