17th Century - The Deer Tower (Hiran Minar)

February 2020 · 2 min read · Sheikhupura

Hiran Minar (The Deer Tower) was constructed in early 17th-century Mughal era and is located in Sheikhupura, Punjab and that time this place's name was Jahangirpura. The complex was built by Emperor Jahangir (1605 - 1627) in honor of his pet antelope. He was givin the name of “Munsiraj” by Jahangir. This site was used as a game reserve of Emperor Jahangir. The emperor captured this antelope at this place. With in a month this antelope left wild nature and adopted pet qualities. Munsiraj had been trained to lure wild animals to the game reserve and then emperor hunt them. Soon that antelope became the leader of all royal antelopes. Jahangir loved that antelope and spent most of his time with him. So when this antelope died then Jahangir built this tomb in remembrance of his Munsiraj.

With Hiran Minar they also constructed a Baradari and a water tank. The water tank is in rectangle shape and on this four corner rooms are constructed. Steps are also made in Tank pool that lead animals to drink water. Main Baradari is a three story building and its lower portion is built to mount on boats.

Hiran Minar has always been a picnic spot for local people. If someone visits Shiekupura he must visit this place too. Being a famous tourist destination government is now paying some attention to it and is trying to restore this place. Minar has been newly built with a garden around it.

Its entery fee is 100 Rs. Entry to Baradari is mostly closed because of work in progress. In water tank boating is also a fun activity. There is also a refreshment shop for visitors.
