Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Abu Dhabi

December 2019 · 2 min read · Abu Dhabi

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. The largest mosque in the country. During Eid, it may be visited by more than 41,000 people. The Grand Mosque was constructed between 1996 and 2007. It was designed by Syrian architect Yousef Abdelky.

During my visit to Dubai I planned to see this beautiful mosque. From Dubai to Abu Dhabi it was a three hour long drive. Mosque was full of visitors and a large number of foreigners were also present. Photography in and outside mosque is allowed except for Shaikh Zayed's grave. Visitors are required to dress modestly and behave respectfully. Men should wear long trouser and full sleeve shirt or half sleeve in summer. Women are required to wear Hijab and Abaya, that is available free of cost at the entrance. People were taking pictures and admiring the beauty of mosque.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque gave us opportunity to capture its beauty from every possible angle. Reflections on floor, modern architectural art elements and different color schemes are very majestic. The design of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque is inspired by Persian, Mughal, and Egyptian architect. They also took some inspiration from Badshahi Mosque in Lahore. The dome layout and floor plan of the mosque was inspired by the Badshahi Mosque.

Entery of mosque is free and you don't need tickets. General visiting times are Saturday-Thursday 9am to 10pm. The mosque is closed to tourists (but open to worshipers) on Friday mornings. It reopens for tourists after 4.30pm on Friday.
