Shipka Memorial Church - Places in Bulgaria (18 photos)

November 2019 · 3 min read · Stara Zagora

Hello, fellow travelers!

I hope that with this article I am putting the start of a series of short photo stories about places in Bulgaria that got my attention and camera time ;)

Let's see if I will have the time, energy and persistence to continue along with publications about our beautiful country and warm people.

Few weeks ago we were driving from Southern to Northern Bulgaria. Our country is divided geographically in those two parts by the beautiful Stara Planina mountain, it is a range with high peaks, sometimes there is snow even in the hottest months of August, when the temperatures in the valleys hit 40+ degree C.

The town of Shipka, named after the mountain peak close holds this amazing church, built in a Russian Orthodox style that never ceases to amaze me.

To get through the mountain the only way is near the church. With its golden cupola it can be seen from ten of kilometers and is quite impressive in all the seasons.

There is a small car parking very close to it, so no hiking is required. I loved that old looking post box in front, I wonder who would send the old fashioned mail nowadays?

There is only one word you can say when stepping towards it: "Wow"

We were lucky to have these impressive clouds above, aren't we?

Why there is no more new buildings with such amazing architecture? Pity!

See the attention to the details and the master usage of colors!

Yes, we took lots of photographs during this visit! How else...

The green from the surrounding mountain forest contrasts in a perfect way with the red and white colors of the building.

I tried to avoid the common photos, trying to find a different perspective. This place could be overcrowded at holidays and weekends as it is really popular and a must-see!

There is much more to it from the perspective of history. Shipka is a place of huge importance to Bulgaria.

As you know me as a visual guy, I will provide the Wiki link in case you are interested and have the time:
