Evening drums

Evening drums

August 2019 · 2 min read

I was staying at a temple a few months ago at the south of Taiwan, and during the evening I went out to my car to fetch something. Suddenly I heard the sound of drums from the main praying hall. I went over to take a look.

I saw a monk sitting on very high chair playing a massive drum that was hanging down from the ceiling. In the photo below, there's a live size statue of one of the Gods on the right hand side. You will see him in the video next to the monk, and you will know how high I'm talking about. There was nobody else in the hall, just the monk and the drum. I don't know if meditation is the right word because he was playing the drums which was quite loud. All I know is that it was very calming that's why I say it's meditation. I was very drawn to it, and stood there in awe, watching him play the drums for a good ten minutes.

In my video, I'll show you the buzz of the temple during day time. There were lots of worshippers that day because it was a Sunday. I think there must have been some sort of event during the day as there were lots of boxes of fireworks and firecrackers on the ground. This was a sharp contrast to the evening when it was very relaxing listening and watching the monk playing the drums. I ope you enjoy it as much as I did.
