Durban has a beautiful promenade which runs along the beachfront for 11,2 kilometres from the Blue Lagoon, famous for its Bunny Chows as well as a popular fishing spot; first stop is Suncoast Beach which fronts the Suncoast Casino; Battery Beach across from the now defunct Natal Command military base which is set to become a film studio; Snake Park Beach which no longer has a snake park but the name has stuck; Bay of Plenty with the best surfing waves; North Beach and Dairy Beach with its many restaurants and popular hangouts such as Joe Cools, sand artists and colourful rikshaw men as well as a Funfair; New Beach with its paddling pools and jungle gyms; South Beach and Addington Beach with the Addington Hospital across the road before ending at Africa's largest marine theme park, Ushaka Marine World.

We started our walk at Snake Park Beach and when we got to Ushaka we headed for the Durban Water Sports Club through the canals; our walk was around 5 kilometres.

Moyos on the Pier is seen in the next photograph, they offer a unique African dining experience. It's just a short walk along the pier to dine or have cocktails with the Indian Ocean all around; it was low tide when I took this photo. Their promise of warm hospitality and a modern African ambiance certainly holds true from the time one enters till you leave. One can also dine at Moyos in Ushaka Village where you get treated to an African face painting if you wish.

I will show you a little of what we saw walking through Ushaka Village Walk and the Durban Waterfront with its canals and gondolas.

The Phantom Ship at Ushaka houses a couple of restaurants as well as the Aquarium. The Cargo Hold Restaurant has a window into the shark tank, quite surreal seeing them swim past as you're dining.

This is my niece's little girl Mia having an eye-to-eye with a massive fish at the aquarium on a previous visit.

Ushaka Village Walk houses many little stores selling African art, beach gear, electronic goods and much more.

The Point area was the home of Mahatma Gandhi during the late 19th century; Gandhi successfully led a non-violent independence movement against British rule in India and advocated for Indian Civil rights here in South Africa.

The area sadly fell into decay but the city fathers and property developers have been hard at work restoring it back to its former glory but still have a long way to go.

We see a mix of Victorian architecture with pretty *broekie lace,* ornate trim usually in iron or wood to decorate the wrap-around verandas; to sleek modern high rise hotels and condos.

Some of these buildings are used for holiday stays and some as offices.

Gondolas in Africa?
Gondolas in Africa?

We walked along the canals and saw a couple of gondolas floating by with tourists looking really relaxed; gondolas in Africa? Yep, we're certainly not in Venice! There were fish and even a couple of hammerhead sharks swimming in the waterways.

We finally reached the Point Water Sports Club and enjoyed lunch while watching the ships coming in and out the harbour; but that's a story for another day!
